Train tickets from Taipei to Hualien

Taipei City is served by High Speed Rail (HSR), railway (TRA) and Taipei Metro (MRT) train services. This is only location where all three types of trains converge. All stations are below street level and are linked underground. From Taipei Station, you can take the high Speed Train (HSR), normal, or slow trains (TRA) to many stations: Hualien, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Jiayi, Tainan, as well as other smaller cities.

The biggest train station in Taipei is called Taipei Railway Station 台北火車站, by the Taiwan Railway Administrationor Taipei Main Station. It is located in the old part of the city.

Taipei City is served by High Speed Rail (HSR), railway (TRA) and Taipei Metro (MRT) train services. The only location where all three types of trains converge is Taipei Main Station. All stations are below street level and are linked underground. Follow the directional signs posted along the way and walk through the underground linkways from Taipei Station (HSR) to Taipei Railway Station (TRA) and Taipei Main Station (MRT).
From Taipei Station, you can take the Taipei Metro (MRT), the High Speed Train (HSR), normal, or slow trains (TRA) to many stations: Hualien, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Jiayi, Tainan, as well as other smaller cities.

1. TRA tickets

Is it really necessary to book tickets in advance?


If you’re planning to go to Hualien on a Fri, Sat or Sun, it’s advisable to book tickets in advance. For travel on other days, it’s still good to book as it will give you peace of mind. However, if you prefer flexibility in your schedule, you may choose to buy your tickets directly from the train station.

How to get TRA Tickets

Online booking
Online booking only open 14 days in advance. You must book fast because tickets to Hualien station are always sold out. Journey from Taipei Main station to Hualien station takes about 2 hour 10 minutes to 3 hours depending on type of train. Tickets cost NT$440 per pax.


1) Click on "Time Table" to check and choose date, time departure from Taipei to Hualien. Write down train numbers, timing, cost of tickets on paper.

2) Click on "Online Booking", click on order tickets using train number and fill up form same as below. You will get Booking Codes.

3) Click on "Online Payment", if you want English, click on English at top row. Read instruction. After reading, click on check box to show that you understand condition. Then click on "Start to buy tickets". Fill up Passport number and booking codes as given earlier. Fill in credit card detail.

You will get confirmation voucher. Use this voucher at TRA station to collect your train tickets at least 30 minutes before your departure train

Buy ticket at the counters

Tickets can be purchased from the TRA counter at Taipei Main Station (also at Breeze Centre). There often has a super long queue at the counters but so much fewer people at the Tickets Vending Machines just next to the counters because sometimes sold out tickets at the machines can still be bought at the counters.

Tips:

  • It’s highly recommended to book your tickets in advance. Especially during peak season.
  • There are different types of train route, be sure to look at or ask about the duration of the trains
  • Try to choose the train that travels via mountain or coast line for beautiful scenery. You can get majestic mountains view along the journey.


How to go to Hualien if you cannot buy TRA train tickets


If you don’t buy your ticket in advance, all the tickets are sold out is not very unusual. Therefore, you need to know how to go to Hualien if you cannot buy TRA train tickets
If you cannot buy TRA train tickets to Hualien, then you can follow this guide. There arebus services at the Station.
From Taipei Main station, go out MRT exit 1 to go to Q square 4th floor gate 13 to buy tickets for Kamalan buses. Boarding gates are 13 and 14 on 4F. You can seethis map for location:http://www.kamalan.com.tw/servicr_station.php
1) Kamalan buses (葛瑪蘭客運) at Q Square on 4th floor across Civic Boulevard Road opposite Taipei Bus station to Yilan / Luodong. Kamalan bus travels by Freeway 5 and the 12.9km Shuehshan Tunnel taking about 50 mins.
No need to purchase in advance because buses depart frequently.

2) HSR tickets


The HSR is most method of transit for travelers to cross the island due to its simplicity and speed.

Where to buy

There are several ways to purchase HSR tickets. Inside the stations, there are ticket vending machines in English language instructions and there are the usual counters where you can queue and buy directly from the station staff. They can also be bought from 711, Family Mart and other convenience stores nationwide. You can also buy them online from THSR’s Booking System, advance bookings can be purchased as early as 28 days from your preferred date.You need to provide your passport number and a phone number to purchase your HSR ticket over the internet.

**Note:

  • If you buy your tickets at the Taipei Main Stations, it’s very straightforward. Both cash and credit cards are accepted.
  • When you put your ticket into the machine to go to your platform, make sure to take it back as you'll need it to exit at your final destination.
  • You can manage to have a seat even on rush hours, so you don’t need to worry too much about reserving a seat in advance.

Taiwan High Speed Rail Trains leave every 20 minutes in both directions.

HSR Fare Table - Standard Car: Reserved Seat, Non-Reserved Seat
In standard class you also have the option of traveling in reserved or unreserved cars. Reserved Seat tickets have a seat number while Non-Reserved Seat tickets are discounted, and passengers are free to find a seat or stand in cars. Unreserved is a little cheaper compared to a full-priced ticket, but you might be standing if all the seats are full. All compartments are equipped with air-conditioning and restrooms. A snack cart makes its rounds throughout the train offering affordable snacks, beverages and lunch boxes.
