1.EGG PANCAKES (DAN BIEN | 蛋餅)

The egg pancake is a traditional Taiwanese breakfast dish. It’s a flour crepe made with a thin layer of beaten egg, and sprinkled with chopped green onions. All are rolled up nicely. For more tastes, additional meats can be added.

2.PORK BELLY RICE (LU ROU FAN | 滷肉飯)

Pork belly rice is rounded out with pickled mustard greens and a braised egg. You can add a bit chili sauce then mix them together. You may think the food is so simple but it is absolutely delicious. The pork belly rice can be found in almost Taiwanese street markets.

3.TAIWANESE SAUSAGE (XIANG CHANG | 香腸)

Taiwanese sausage is a very popular street food. If you want to eat like locals and with locals, you can gobble it up with raw garlic bites on the side. The sweetiness and fattiness of sausage go perfectly with garlic, which will satisfy your stomach! You can find a sausage stand in many night markets in Taipei.

4.GUA BAO (割包)

Gua Bao is a Taiwanese snack food consisting of a slice of stewed meat and other condiments sandwiched between flat steamed bread. The traditional filling for gua bao is a slice of red-cooked porkbelly, typically dressed with pickled mustard, cilantro, and ground peanuts.

These buns can be found at most night markets, but 藍家割包 (lanjia guar bao) at Roosevelt Road in Zhongzen District claimed to make the best one.

5.STINKY TOFU (CHOU DO FU | 臭豆腐 )

The famous stink is a result of fermentation of the tofu, but don’t worry, it’s much better than it tastes (or looks). Stinky tofu made from fermented milk, vegetables, and meat; the brine can also includes dried shrimp, amaranth greens, mustard greens, bamboo shoots, and Chinese herbs. A perfect one is soft and airy inside while crispy outside. Eat stinky tofu with hot sauce and pickled cabbage to cut the grease.

You can easily find this type of snack in several night markets or even some roadside stands. For more local taste, try it at street vendors in Taiwan. Its smell attracts eaters from a long distance away.

6.PORK BLOOD CAKE (ZHU XUE GAO | 豬血糕)

Pork blood cake is the combination between sticky rice and pork blood. The rice is drenched in pig blood, steamed, bathed in a pork soy broth and rolled with peanut flour. Cilantro is put on top of this cake.

7.OYSTER OMELETTES (OH AH JIAN | 蚵仔煎)

It’s said that a trip to Taiwan is not completed without trying this signature dish – fried oyster omelette. The dish consists of an omelette with a filling primarily composed of small oysters. As normail, Ying - Yang balance is always preserved as the leafy vegetables are added to complete the omlette. Ah, don't forget to try this dish with the secret sauce which make oyster omelettes outstanding.

8.BAKED BLACK PEPPER BUNS (HU JIAO BING | 胡椒餅)

The black pepper bun is a pork/black pepper mixture. The filling is a mix of the meat of choice + black pepper + other spices. At Raohe, the pork filling has a good black pepper taste, the meat is tender, and the outside bread shell is crispy yet chewy.

Where to eat

This little gem might be a little bit difficult to track down unless you know where to find them, but it's definitely worth it. It’s not far from Longshan Temple, at the corner of Kangding Road and Guangzhou Street for only 30NT (Au$1.30) each.

The bun standing at Raohe Night Market is widely chose as a reliable stop for both locals and foreigner. From the temple side (right next to MRT station Songshan), it is the first stand going into the gate. At peak hours, there is often a long queue in front of the stand.

10.WARM TOFU PUDDING (DOU HUA | 豆花)

This dessert consists of silky fresh tofu in a light sweet syrup and various boba and/or taro balls. Douhua is served with sweet toppings like cooked peanuts, adzuki beans, cooked oatmeal, tapioca, mung beans, and a syrup flavored with ginger or almond. Warm tofu pudding is surely a perfect treat for a cool rainy day.

12.FRIED MILKFISH 虱目魚

15.RADISH CAKE 蘿蔔糕

This is fried radish cake that you can easily find in Dim sum stalls. It is typically made of Chinese daikon radish which is shredded, molded into squares and pan fried. When you are in Taipei, you can't go wrong with radish cake. The outside is crunchy but the inside is so soft. and delicate.

18.STIR FRIED RICE NOODLES 炒米粉

Stir fried rice noodle dish is a the thin rice noodles are cooked with chicken, shrimp, or tofu, vegetables like green beans or bean sprouts, and salty, tangy, and spicy condiments like fish sauce, vinegar, and chiles. 19. HOT PLATE TOFU 鐵板豆腐

Taiwan has amazing tofu so if you are a fan of this food, enjoy Taiwanese Tofu. The tofu is served on a hot plate with the basic selection of vegetables and meat. 20.WATER SPINACH 空心菜

If you are familiar with Asian food, water spinach or kongxincai (in Taiwanese) is not a strange vegetable. 21. ZONGZI 粽子

Zongzi is another signature Taiwanese food with sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves and are usually made during the Dragon Boat Festival. In China, people wrap Zongzi into rectangular shapes while it is shaped in trigangular in Taiwan. Taiwan’s rice contains mushrooms, peanuts and pork and some other versions have dried shrimp, bamboo and egg yolks.
