The HSR is the most common method of transit for travelers to cross the island due to its simplicity and speed. The high speed rail allows direct access to all major cities and various regions. Therefore, it’s a convenient transport for travelers to explore Tainan. There is one HSR train route in half an hour at Taipei Main Station
You can take a high speed rail from Taipei Main Station to HSR Tainan Station.

A standard ticket from Taipei to Tainan on the HSR is about NT$1350. Discounts are also available depending on when you travel. Off-peak hours will get you either a Blue discount (15% off) or an Orange discount (35% off) depending on the time and day of the week. Tickets can be purchased at the station, online, or at 7-Eleven or Family Mart convenience stores.
HSR Fare Table - Standard Car: Reserved Seat, Non-Reserved Seat
In standard class, you also have the option of traveling in reserved or unreserved cars. Reserved Seat tickets have seat numbers while Non-Reserved Seat tickets are discounted, and passengers are free to find a seat or stand in cars. Unreserved tickets are a little cheaper compared to full-priced ones but you might be standing if all the seats are full. All compartments are equipped with air-conditioning and restrooms. A snack cart makes its rounds throughout the train offering affordable snacks, beverages and lunch boxes.

**** Note:
- If you want to avoid peak time, you can buy tickets before hopping on train. Rush hours are usually on Friday, national holidays or a long holiday from Dec 31 to Jan 4.
- You can step down at the stop called Confucius Temple, it is easy to get to most hotels by walking, and the temple itself is a national heritage which is well worth a visit.
2. By Bus
There are a large number of buses in Taipei. It gives travellers an inexpensive means of transport to travel around. To take a bus to Tainan, you must arrive at the Taipei Bus Station.

Stage 1: Getting to Taipei Bus Station
From Taipei Main Station (HSR Taipei Station, MRT Taipei Main Station, TRA Taipei Station)
1. Walk towards Zhongshan Underground Shopping Street (中山地下街) from exit R1 of Taipei Main Station (台北車站).
2. Take a 10-minute walk from exit Y1, Y3 or Y5 of Taipei City Mall (Taipei Main Underground Shopping Street台北地下街)

1. Take bus no. 63, 215, 660, 304 Chengde Line (304承德線), Dadaocheng (大稻埕水岸專車) or Danshui-Beimen (淡水-北門) to Taipei Main Station Chengde stop (臺北車站(承德)).
2. Take bus no. 2, 14, 39, 40, 108, 120, 126, 218, 220, 260, 274, 310, 615, 641, 669 or minibus no. 9 (市民小巴9) to Taipei Main Station Zhengzhou stop(臺北車站(鄭州)).
3. Take bus no. 14, 15, 22, 39, 49, 202, 212, 218, 220, 221, 232, 246, 247, 253, 257, 250, 262, 265, 274, 276, 299, 307, 310, 527, 539, 604, 605, 652, 659, Zhongxiao Line (忠孝新幹線) or Blue 1 (藍1) to Taipei Main Station Zhongxiao stop (臺北車站(忠孝)).

Civil Boulevard (市民大道) -> make a right turn at Chengde Road (承德路) -> make a right turn at Changan W. Road (長安西路) -> make a right turn at Zhongshan N. Road (中山北路) -> make a right turn to Huayin St. (華陰街) -> Taipei Bus Station (台北轉運站)
From Wanhua (萬華) & Banqiao (板橋):
Zhongxiao E. Road (忠孝東路) -> make a left turn to Guanqian Road (館前路) -> Chengde Road (承德路) -> make a right turn at Changan W. Rd. (長安西路) -> make a right turn at Zhongshan N. Road (中山北路) -> make a right turn to Huayin St. (華陰街) -> Taipei Bus Station (台北轉運站)
From Xinjuang (新莊) &Sanchong (三重):
Zhongxiao Bridge (忠孝橋) -> make a left turn at Guanqian Road (館前路) -> Chengde Road (承德路) -> make a right turn at Changan W. Rd. (長安西路) -> make a right turn at Zhongshan N. Road (中山北路) -> make a right turn to Huayin St. (華陰街) -> Taipei Bus Station (台北轉運站)
Stage 2: Getting to Tainan from Taipei Bus Stations by bus
Take Aloha Bus, United Bus (UBus), Ho-shin Bus - Tainan route from Taipei Bus Station to Tainan.
**Note:
KuoKuang (King) Bus -Tainan route is available at Taipei West Station which is located close to the Taipei Main Station. It takes about a 4-5hr ride from Taipei to Tainan.

3. By Train:

Visiting the Main Station in Taipei, you can buy a ticket and take train to Tainan downtown. It takes 4 hours and about 27 USD for a ticket. There is almost one train to Tainan in every hour.
The Tainan city TRA station is located at the central Tainan. The slow train from Taipei takes you directly to the downtown and it is convenient to get anywhere from there. You also can visit the official website of Taiwan Railways for more information on train tickets and route schedule.
