2. Top Favorite Places and Activities

These are some highlights of our trips. No matter how many day you have been in this amazing country, you must add them to your plan list.

3. Transport in Hanoi- Cost of Transports

1. Walking

We chose to stay at Hanoi’s Calypso Suites which was on a quiet alley out of the main road.

Every day, we walked along an alley between two lines of buildings. It was interesting to observe the daily lives of locals, stop for a chat or take some photos.Photo by Andrea Schaffer8 Days Exploring The Best Of HanoiPhoto by Andrea Schaffer

The best way to explore the Hanoi Old Quarter and the 36 old streets is on food. It’s really a safe way to get around many narrow busy streets that are always full of traffics. You can stop by everywhere you want to sample some local foods or buy somethings to bring home.

Hanoi's attractions have ideal locations for a walking tour. Many travel agence offers their Hanoi walking while you can surely do it by yourself. This is the recommended route for you:

At the conjunction (numbered 3) go straight--> Luong Ngoc Quyen Street -->there are crowd in summer and winter alike sitting and drinking beer.
Passing Luong Ngoc Quyen-->208 meter-long Hang Giay Street selling “Thit Bo Kho” (Dried spiced beef) and pottery products.
76 Hang Buom Street: the ancient Bach Ma Temple (numbered 5)--> turn back to the junction with Hang Giay--> Hang Chieu Street--> Turning right to the 21 castle gates of Thang Long-->

From Hang Ca--> Cha Ca Street(numbered 9 on the map)-->passing Lan Ong Street--> a venue of toys on Luong Van Can Street (marked 10)--> go to the end of this street and turn right-->Hang Gai Street

Left Hang Gai for Ly Quoc Su Street-->Ly Quoc Su Temple--> Saint Joseph Cathedral at 40 Nha Chung Street-->Turn right to Le Thai To Street-->Hoan Kiem Lake--> Dinh Tien Hoang Street.

2. Xe Om

Xe om is also a great choice as it’s very cheap, fast and convenient. You can find Xe Oms (motorcycle taxis) everywhere - at least at every street corner in Hanoi. You will see a man sitting on motorbikes giving you the gesture, and ask "Motorbike?". Make sure you ask them how much to where you are going to and agree on a price in advance. We paid about $1-2 USD for the riding.

3. Cyclo

Cyclo is another nice choice for touring the Old Quarter's narrow streets. You should bargain with the drivers before setting out. You can pay as little as 20,000 VND for a short ride, and 30,000 VND for a longer haul. You can also hire by the hour for about $2. It costed us VND 40,000 ($2) per hour for visiting around the Old Quarter. The experience was worth every penny.

8 Days Exploring The Best Of HanoiPhoto by vietbao.vn

4. Taxi and motorcycle

Taxi and motorcycle can be rented easily within the 36 old streets. However we find it hard to explore fully the local lifestyle on the taxi and it’s too dangerous to ride a motorbike in the areas.

Recommended taxi services:

  • Taxi CP: 0438 26 26 26
  • Hanoi Taxi 0438 53 53 53
  • Mai Linh Taxi: 0438 333333 - 0438 616161 - 043 8222666

Mai Linh is the most popular and reliable taxi firm you should take. However, you need to map out the routes you are going to go to inform drivers that you know the distance. Taxi fare is labeled clearly inside cars, around 12,000 VND for the first km, 17,500 VND for the next 30 km and 15,000 VND for more than 30 km. The prices may vary with change of gasoline prices.

Fake taxies or bad taxi drivers are ready out there to cheat your money. Even though Ha Noi has made efforts on controlling fake taxies, there are still a few that may make you become a victim if you don't beware.

5.Tips on Traveling In Ha noi

1. General tips

Hanoi experiences four distinct seasons. You should prepare for a sweltering summer and freezing winter. A warm jacket, scarf, hat and water-proof shoes are worthwhile during the November-March winter (this advice is doubled if you are heading to Halong Bay).

The best street food is where locals – especially the young crowds – gather. Trust your instinct and try the food where locals eat, not necessarily where your guide book says.

8 Days Exploring The Best Of HanoiPhoto by Brian Huang (黃世璈)

When you walk around Parks or lakes in cities and young students come to you and ask if you can talk a bit in english with them. Don’t be afraid, spend some time talking about your travelling as they are practicing their English speaking.

Hanoi traffic is quite crazy and you always wonder how you can cross the road with these crazy traffic? Just follow a local!

Always keep your receipt when you do some shopping or park your bike, motorbike, car. Your shopping basket will be checked after you pay for it and getting the motorbike, car, bike park without the ticket is almost impossible or very troublesome.

Snatch thieves are less common in Hanoi, compared to pickpockets, especially at crowded areas such as the weekend night markets. It would be wise to keep your belongings closed to you.

Passports should always be kept in the safe box in your hotel and a photocopied version carried with you when you are out. Sometimes, when performing currency exchange (in banks especially), the staff will request for it to verify that you are indeed a foreigner before they approve your request.

8 Days Exploring The Best Of HanoiPhoto by Caitriana Nicholson

Also for safety reasons, try to avoid walking on the streets after 11pm (for your info, weekend markets end at 11pm).

Vietnam uses Plug Types A, C and G with Voltages of 127V and 220V

It’s best to prepare some snacks on the bus to and from Ha Long City or eat a simple meal/ buy snacks at the 30 minutes stop-over Souvenirs Centre. It takes 3-4 hours to reach from Hanoi.

Get a waterproof casing bag for your phone accessories or camera so you can take pictures while kayaking

2. Where to exchange money in Ha Noi

8 Days Exploring The Best Of HanoiPhoto by http://hoianfoodtour.com/

You can exchange money at an official desk in the airport. At the Airport: 100 SGD = 1.64 Million VND

The rate they offer is not as good as at banks or the gold shops on Hang Bac street (No 8 and No 10) or Ha Trung St, Hanoi Jewellery Shop (“Black Market”) 100 SGD = 1.65 Million VND

It's best to do a quick calculation before you go in, so that you know roughly how much you should be getting.

3. ATMs in Ha Noi

We saw Vietcombank and Incombank branch locations throughout the city.

Most of the ATMs have a limit of 2 million VND ($100) at one time but there are also ATMs where you can take out 5 million dong (around180 Euro). The fees for using the ATM typically cost me about $3 per transaction....about $1.50 for the Vietnam bank and my bank charged me approximately $1.50.

You can see the ATMs at the international arrival terminal and domestic departure terminal in the Noi Bai Airport. Turn left just before the exit doors in the arrivals hall and walk until you spot them.

There was a Citibank ATM practically across the street from your hotel in the Hoan Kiem district. Up in the Westlake area, the ATM we used several times required you to climb some scaffolding to a second-story ATM

8 Days Exploring The Best Of HanoiPhoto by http://www.hsbc.com.vn/

If you want to withdraw a larger amount, you can go to the counter in any of the banks in Hanoi. There you can withdraw the maximum amount allowed by your visa card in your home country.

My experience is that in terms of day-to-day expenses, $US100 goes a long way in Vietnam.
It is not advisable to carry large amounts of cash with you. Foreign tourists’ wallets and purses are a prime target for the packs of pickpockets

And I found that most of the smaller stores in Hanoi DID NOT take credit cards. The only real hassle I ran into using the ATM machines was that they typically gave you cash in 500,000 notes. I shopped in the markets and often ate on the street...and no one would be able to make change for this large note. Thus it became a habit for me to get 500,000 notes from the ATM and then find a bank and have them change the big bills into 50,000 dong notes. This worked well because the 50,000 dong note is much more "usable" for the smaller purchases you might make.

7. Food in Hanoi

8 Days Exploring The Best Of HanoiPhoto by Jo delCorro

Hanoi is really a foody heaven. It’s hard to find somewhere else in the world offering the most decent and cheap foods like Hanoi. Food is one of the biggest reasons of our trip to this city.

Here are some excellent foods that we never forget

Pho

Classic pho has four ingredients: clear stock, quickly boiled beef, rice noodles and herbs or green onions. Travelers can try Pho at small shops along the streets. Just go down streets in the morning and look for a place that you see a crowded of local people gathering around having Pho as their breakfast

On the first day we traveled around the 36 old streets where offers almost everything of local life. There are more than 36 streets and each has its own charm and features. For example:

One day 5, when we arrived in Halong city, we stopped by a souvenir and craft shop that was very interesting. If you have no time to get handcrafted souvenirs (crafted jewellery boxes, embroidery painting, silk scarves, silk clothing) while in Hanoi Old Quarters, the stop-over Souvenir & Handicraft Centre is worth checking out. Quality is quite high but more expensive than what you can find in Old Quarters.
