Why Ywama Village is special ?

Ywama village is located on the western side of Inle Lake, Shan State, Myanmar. The village is most easily accessible by boat from the town of Nyaung Shwe on the north side of the lake. Ywama Village is located in Inlay Lake. It is the largest village with the streets of the village like the webs of the canals. Some of the beautiful teak houses are built on large wooden poles driven into the Lake bed. The main activity and attraction is the floating market in the largest canal.

Nearly all the homes and buildings are constructed on piles driven into the lake bed. Residents travel around by canoe, but there are also numerous bamboo walkways and bridges over the canals running throughout. As such, there is no main street or square, but there are pagoda complexes and monasteries on built-up areas.

What to explore at Ywama Village?

Inle Lake owns a circle of 5-day rotating markets that opens in a different location on the lake each day. The market of Ywama takes place on the grounds of a pagoda complex. Actually, most trading activities occur on the water as merchants’ small boats filled with handicrafts or produces which are offered to locals and tourists.

You can also visit a monastery and a stupa, weaving, metal smithing, wood carving and umbrella workshops. On the other hand, you will easily find numerous tomatoes, vegetables grown by local farmers in many floating gardens anchored in place with bamboo piles.

Tips for you

  • If you really want to enjoy this once famous floating market, you need to get up very early to get there. The market is in full swing at around 8:30 AM so you should reach there before 7 AM.
  • It has no main street or square, however, you still have a good chance to visit pagoda complexes and monasteries on construction areas.
