Why West Mebon is special ?

The base for the temple was a square. A sandstone platform at the center is linked to a causeway of laterite and sandstone that leads to the east dyke. The West Mebon was originally surrounded by a square enclosure with three-square sandstone entry towers and a sanctuary on the East Side is reasonably intact. The sides of the towers are carved with lively animals set in small squares, a type of decoration found only at the Baphuon. http://www.tourismcambodia.com/

What to explore at West Mebon?

- It was originally surrounded by a square rampart with three square, sandstone gopuras and a sanctuary on one level crowned with a lotus. Most towers have collapsed, but the three on the east side are reasonably intact. A sandstone platform at the center is linked to a causeway of laterite and sandstone that leads to the east dyke

- The carvings exhibit some of the first examples of carvings of animals in natural, non-mythological scenes, reminiscent of carving on Baphuon. West Mebon may have originally housed a renowned bronze Buddha statue which is now held at the National Museum in Phnom Penh.

How to get to West Mebon?

To reach West Mebon you can either leave Angkor Thom through the west Gate or drive around the West Baray to the opposite site, from where you can take a boat to the West Mebon. Otherwise follow National Route no 6 from Siem Reap town in direction Poipet. After you have passed the roundabout that leads to the airport take the next possible road to the right. The street will lead you directly to the West Baray. Turn left for the boat pier.http://101cambodia.com/
