Why Wat Nong Sikhounmuang is special ?

Nong Sikhounmuang is one of the bigger temples in Luang Prabang. It was built in 1729, during the reign of King Inta Som (1727-76), but was razed in a fire in 1774. The only thing salvaged from the fire was a bronze statue. A full restoration was carried out in 1804 by the Thais, thereby introducing some Thai elements to the design.

The facade and pediment was redecorated towards the end of the 19th century. However, in 1965 the wat was badly damaged during bad weather and was subsequently rebuilt on a reinforced concrete base. The present building is in Luang Prabang II style and features a single porch and a triple nave with six bays.

What to explore at Wat Nong Sikhounmuang?

Situated opposite the "Elephant" restaurant, the pagoda is richly decorated with stencils. In a style inspired by that of Vientiane (see the architectural section), the temple has one of the most dazzlingly beautiful coloured roofs, in the Thai style, the same sort as that of Wat Sene.

Inside Wat Nong Sikhounmuang is a bronze statue, Pra Chao Ong Saensaksid, which was the only "survivor" of the fire of 1774.

A beautifully decorated wat within the old town & free to enter. We cycled here on a clear day and were able to take a look around uninterrupted by locals or tourists. The decoration and detail on the buildings, especially the doors, was pretty amazing.
