Why Wat Khili is special ?
Temple of the Golden Mountain, built during the 18th century by Chao Kham Sattha, who came from the northern Xieng Kouang province and built his temple in a style reminiscent of those found in the mountains close to the Plain of Jars. The building of the wat reinstated the relationship between Xieng Kouang and Luang Prabang.
Wat Sop is said to have been built by King Theng Kham, who reigned from 1479-86, to commemorate the death of his father, King Sao Takaphat Phene Phao, who reigned from 1438-79. King Sao Takaphat was killed in battle. Wat Sop has been renovated a few times since then. Its gable is decorated with gold leafy design. The sim was expanded in the 1950s with the addition of side peristyles.
The collection of buildings form an unusal blend of French colonial and Laos temple architecture.
What to explore at Wat Khili?
Wat Khili, itself, has four square red columns with a large gold wheel of life on the gable and 2 matching wheels between the columns.built by Chao Kham Sattha in a style reminiscent of temples found in the mountains close to the Plain of Jars in Xieng Kouang province where he came from, reinstating the relationship between there and Luang Prabang.
