Why Viet Nam Museum of Ethnology is special ?
The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Vietnamese: Bảo tàng Dân tộc học Việt Nam) is a museum in Hanoi, Vietnam, which focuses on the 54 officially recognized ethnic groups in Vietnam. It is located on a 3.27-acres (13,200 m2) property in the Cầu Giấy District, about 8 km from the city center.
It is widely considered to be the finest modern museum in Vietnam and a tourist attraction in Hanoi.
The proposal for the museum was officially approved on December 14, 1987. Construction lasted from 1987 to 1995, and it was opened to the public on November 12, 1997.
The exhibition building was designed by the architect Ha Duc Linh, a member of the Tày ethnic group, in the shape of a Dong Son drum, and the interior architecture was designed by the French architect Véronique Dollfus.
What to explore at Viet Nam Museum of Ethnology?
In the grounds are examples of traditional village houses – a Tay stilt house, an impressive Bahnar communal structure and a Yao home. Don’t miss the soaring, thatch-roofed Giarai tomb, complete with risqué wooden statues.
A fair-trade craft shop sells books, beautiful postcards, and arts and crafts from ethnic communities.
There is an indoor and outdoor section to explore so you might want to plan your visit with outdoor temperatures in mind.
The village huts outside for the minority groups are interesting when it comes to the long house and the high house. Outside, the museum have many houses which the kids loved crawling in and out of. The kids will have a good time playing the games, watching the water puppets and climbing up the ladders to check out the various homes displayed on the grounds of the museum. This is one of the best things to do in Hanoi with kids.
How to get to Viet Nam Museum of Ethnology?

Tips for you
It's one of those things which you simply must see when you're in Hanoi. It's very well curated and the exhibitions on the outside are lovely to see.
The Museum of Ethnology is Ha Noi's best and most interesting visitor attraction... it features a wealth of information about the different cultures and peoples of this fascinating country via well-curated exhibits both inside and outdoors. Although the place can be crowded at times, a bit of patience will enable one to view items without the throngs of visitors (both locals and tourists). Be sure to spend time in the outdoor area behind the main building, as this is where the examples of traditional houses/buildings can be found; within them are videos documenting their construction (most fascinating to view indeed!). At 40k VND per adult ticker (<$2), the Museum of Enthnology is a wonderful attraction that folks of all ages will enjoy :)
