Why Togetsukyo Bridge is special ?
Togetsukyo Bridge is amongst the most famous bridges in Japan. There has been a bridge at its location for more than 1000 years. In the Heian Period it was considered an ideal spot for moon viewing parties. The Bridge's name Togetsukyo means "moon crossing."
The current bridge dates to 1934. It's considered a good point from which to view the pleasant Arashiyama area of western Kyoto. The view is particularly spectacular when the cherry blossoms that line the Oi River are in bloom or when the surrounding hills show their autumn colors. In the autumn leaves season, special lighting is set up at the bridge so that the view can be enjoyed at night.
