Why Tao Dan Park is special ?
An ideal urban green space, Tao Dan Park covers 10 hectares of Saigon and is home to over 1,000 big trees. Early in the morning the Tao Dan Park is filled with people exercising, walking, and practicing tai chi. Look for the replica of Nha Trang's Cham tower and Hung King Temple, both perfect for photos. On the east side the park is populated with interesting statues.
Located in Saigon's District 1, Tao Dan has long entertained residents and vistors to Ho Chi Minh City. Feel the serenity of the lush green space as you go for an early morning or evening stroll. Bask under the shady trees in the afternoon. Given that Saigon's busy Truong Dinh intersects Tao Dan Park, you wouldn't know it by the fresh air and sense of calm the park radiates.

What to explore at Tao Dan Park?
Located just behind the Reunification Palace, Tao Dan Park is one of the bigger green spaces you’ll find downtown. A neat, manicured area mostly shaded by large trees, the first thing that may jump out at you are the park’s large, elaborate plant sculptures of animals, such as tigers and dragons. If you really dig on sculptures, you can find a proper sculpture garden on the small sliver of the park separated by Truong Dinh, the one-way street that crosses through the park.
Besides sculptures and shrines, Tao Dan is a place of activity. In the morning you can find a variety of city dwellers enjoying badminton, practising tai chi, or showing off their prized caged birds. In the evening, go to the park to see people working out on the public exercise machines in the park’s north corner; or join in an early afternoon aerobics class, which is free and draws dozens of participants.
A park most visitors to the city will walk through, as it offers a quiet path from the Saigon backpacker area to Ben Thanh market, 23-9 Park is a thin park that stretches the length of Pham Ngu Lao. Named after the anniversary of the day Ho Chi Minh rallied the newly independent Vietnam against the returning French in 1945, this is another good park to cool down and people watch.
Inside the shaded park you’ll find various gazebos, a small amphi-theatre and a small playground for children, as well as plenty of room for exercise and lounging. The park becomes particularly active at night, when it fills with locals who sit along the ground and buy drinks and snacks from vendors who line the park’s edge. More than an everyday park, 23-9 comes to life during special events and holidays, especially Tet, when the park hosts concerts, festivals and flower markets.

Every day at around 7am, bird lovers in Saigon will gather at a cafe shop, which is in the park, to drink coffee and they bring along their pet birds for them to socialize with each other. N.B the birds are in cages, yes, it's pretty sad but it's a cultural thing. Just come and join them, i think you will find the joy in the activity and enjoy it as much as they do. I went to the birdy morning coffee twice. One was on Sunday morning and one was on a weekday. On Sunday, after the birds-in-cage watching, there was a parrots event. People with parrots or parakeets will join in and it's well fun. However, on weekdays morning, there was no parrots so I reckon it's best to go on Sunday morning. The other parts of the park is packed with scout boys and girls on Sunday morning so if you want to wander around in "peace" you should go on weekdays. It's less crowded. Tao Dan park is small but it's quite good for bird watching. We've seen some bulbuls, a laughing thrush, and a guy, who usually hang around in the park, saw a hornbill once.
Beautiful park in heart of city. Nice old trees. Interesting to see how locals use the park
