Why Tamsui River Mangrove Conservation Area is special ?

Tamsui River Mangrove Conservation Area is located quite near the Hongshulin MRT station (the station just before the Tamsui Terminus) is the Hongshulin mangrove swamp, the largest area of homogenous mangrove swamp of a type called shuibizai; kandelia candel in Chinese. This type of mangrove, which is usually found in estuaries, has adapted to the salty waters that wash in with the tides. This fascinating environment is also full of riverside birds, such as egrets and snipes and there are over 30 kinds of crabs in the area. The best way of getting into the swamp is via the Mangrove Conservation Area which is located on Lane 50 of Waiganjenlin south of the Hongshulin MRT Station. On the second floor of the station is the Mangrove Swamp Exhibition Center where visitors can gain an understanding of the special ecology of the swamps.

What to explore at Tamsui River Mangrove Conservation Area?

This rather rare and, to some, odd attraction is just south of the Hongshulin MRT station. It's rarity lies in the fact that is the only publicly accessible mangrove swamp of the type shuibizai. These plants will only grow in the salty waters of estuaries, and are generally in areas that are hard to reach.

The are is a great place for watching birds, so ornithologists should be sure to bring binoculars. Furthermore, the swamp is home to some thirty species of crab, some of which live only here. The visitor center is the only access point to the swamp and can give you any and all information you need.
