Why Ryuokyo Canyon is special ?
Ryuokyo Valley is an amazing ravine between Kawaji Onsen and Kinugawa Onsen spa areas. The water color changes from white, to blue to purple, and the stream meanders like a violent dragon’s body. Because of this color and shape, it is called the "Valley of the Dragon King". The eyes of visitors will be delighted by many small falls which flow into the river, mountain sides full of fresh green, and flowers of singular shape and beauty. The course starts from Ryuokyo Station on the Noiwa Tesudo Line, connecting from the Tobu Kinugawa Line.

What to explore at Ryuokyo Canyon?
The gorge was formed approximately 22 million years ago as the flow of the Kinugawa River wore away the volcanic rocks that had been thrown up by underwater volcanic eruptions. The gorge's beautiful scenery can be enjoyed by walking on the Ryuo-kyo Natural Trail along the river.

Reviews
Get off of the train here and hike the loop trail to get great views of the Kinugawa River and a series of waterfalls gracefully dropping into the canyon. The trail is well maintained and well marked. I would rate it to be of medium intensity due to some uphill work, some muddy areas and some areas requiring a modicum of balance.
