Why Romdeng restaurant is special ?
Romdeng is set in a beautiful colonial building whose wooden carvings, tables, chairs and unique lights were all hand made in Cambodia. The silk goods and cushions adorning Romdeng were made by our students in sewing training at Mith Samlanh and its walls are hung with beautiful paintings produced by young people from the art classes there. All of this plus a pool, free WIFI, a family area and a gift shop mean a visit to Romdeng is a must. Romdeng specialises in Cambodian cuisines
Must try dishes:
Red tree ants with beef and holy basil
Ants of various sizes, some barely visible and others almost an inch long are stir-fried with ginger, lemongrass, garlic, shallots and thinly sliced beef.
Fish amok
Two-toned pomelo salad
Tiger-prawn curry.
Deep-fried tarantulas
Holy basil

River fish w/ green tamarind and mango and onion relish is good. Eggplant with pork/coriander also good.
Lunch on the patio or courtyard of this lovely restored French-colonial villa. A hospitality training school for rescued street kids, Romdeng serves superb Cambodian cuisine.
Run by an NGO that trains street kids as restaurant staff thereby giving them a trade, Romdeng is the best way to eat spectacular Cambodian food and help a worthy cause at the same time.
A few friends and I wanted to sample some Cambodian dishes we hadn't tried during our stay in the country. Romdeng was highly recommended by several other travelers and our guidebooks - plus they offer the famous deep-fried spiders! This place is off the beaten track - we never would have found it but our tuk-tuk driver knew where it was. We got there early so it wasn't packed - which was fortunate. The place is related to Friends, the NGO run restaurant that helps street children learn job skills. This place is much more upscale with nice artwork decorating the place. My two friends and I ordered a few appetizers including the spiders and we each ordered a different main dish. One of the waitresses brought out a live spider that was climbing up her arm which was a big hit to all the customers. The spiders were well worth trying - the legs tasted like crunchy French fries while the body was slightly softer. Our main dishes: fish amok in banana leaf, Khmer beef with peanut curry and pumpkin and mushroom amok with tofu were all excellent. The portions were decent and the staff was excellent. Our biggest disappointment was that it started raining during dinner and we could not walk around and see the courtyard of the restaurant which has a pool and nice plants. If I go back again I will try the stir fried red tree ants w/beef and basil. This place has a traditional menu and some wild ethnic dishes that should be tried. When in Cambodia, try some of the truly unique Cambodian foods!!
Travelling solo has a disadvantage of not being able to eat multiple items ( Note I'm a glutton!), but the chicken curry at Romdeng was a great meal. The balance of flavours of the curry, make up for not being able to sample other delights. There was a special cocktail with Apple mint and Kampot peppers, a nice pair to go with the tasty rich curry. I love Romdeng for the food, and the training that it provides for the Cambodian people. Eat there and help out a worthy cause.
My view on Romdeng would seem to put me in the minority, but perhaps my expectations were inflated. I was hoping for a warm, cosy eatery with an abundance of food 'n' wine and 'eager to please' staff, but I certainly didn't get that. I found the whole Romdeng experience to be underwhelming, which is a shame as I really wanted to enjoy Romdeng :(
