Why Ratu Boko Temple is special ?

Ratu Boko is an archaeological site known to modern Javanese as Kraton Ratu Boko or Ratu Boko's Palace. Ratu Boko is located on a plateau, about three kilometres south of Lara Jonggrang Prambanan temple complex in Yogyakarta Indonesia. The original name of this site is still unclear, however the local inhabitants named this site after King Boko, the legendary king mentioned in Loro Jonggrang folklore. The site covers 16 hectares in two hamlets (Dawung and Sambireja) of the village of Bokoharjo and Prambanan. Unlike the other huge heritage of Borobudur and Prambanan temples, the Ratu Boko was destroyed – only some parts of the palace can be seen as parts of buildings.

What to explore at Ratu Boko Temple?

From this palace, you will feel peace and will be able to see Yogyakarta city and Prambanan temple with Merapi Mountain as the background. The area of the palace as wide as 250,000 m2 is divided into four, namely center, west, southeast, and east parts. The center part consists of the main gateway, square, Combustion Temple, pond, square terrace and assembly hall. Meanwhile, the southeast part includes hall, platform, three temples, pond, and a complex for princess. The caves, Buddha effigy, and a pond are in east part while the west part consists of hills only.

As a heritage building, King Boko Palace is different from other inheritances. Most of other buildings are in the forms of temple or shrine, while this place - as the name implies - shows characteristics of a dwelling place. This can be known from the wooden poles and roofs, even though we can only see remains of stone building. Investigate the palace in more details and you will know more. One of them is the beautiful scenery when the sun is setting in the west and it is considered as the most beautiful sunset on earth.

Its near Prambanan, just outside the Prambanan premises. A bus (shuttle) will take you to it if you get the joined tickets. Its worth a visit during sunset. Do note that its under renovation now so your pictures might not come as good. on asked about when would the renovation be complete, I didn't actually got a clear answer. But definitely wort a visit.

Actually we didn't plan to visit this temple at first, but the ticket officer at Prambanan Temple suggested continuous tickets [including bus-shuttle] to visit this temple. We thought it was a tempting offer, so we took it. And we were not disappointed at all!Ratu Boko Temple is located uphill. The scenery is breathtaking indeed! We saw ruins of the castles, and I could not hep myself imagining the beautiful princesses sat and played in the Keputren while their maids were silently waiting for their commands. We saw the deserted pool which certainly was beautiful once. It was all so fascinating!

Traveling to Ratu Boko Temple made me close to wikipedia and google. There is only limited information which also only describe about technical information, like size, approximate usage, location, etc. There is no historical background or anything which can make us think of this temple in depth. The signpost is also unclear. We had no idea where to go and what we're actually seen.It will be nice if the tourism department/ministry take a good care of such tourism places, so that curious visitor will be well informed.
