The new primates are centered at Ragunan Zoo. It's a world-class facility and guaranteed to entertain and educate both the young and young at heart.

The spot is ideal for family excursions and picnics amid the abundant flora. Come during weekdays when it is less crowded. Open dally from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. The zoological garden is most crowded on Sunday and public holidays.

Tips for you

  • Bring your own toilet paper.
  • This large zoo is quite easy accesible with the Busway line. The most convenient way is to either change stations at Dukuh Atas from K1, or directly go from Sarinah (middle door) to Ragunan (grey buses).
  • If you are a first timer in Jakarta, take note of the traffic, it’s crazy. A trip that shouldn’t take more than half an hour-45 mins can take up to 1h30-2h. Hope this helps.
  • The zoo provides bike-rent if we want to see around.
  • Some facilities like delman (ponicart ride), elephant ride, camel ride, horse ride and train will only be available on Sunday and holidays.
  • There are many warung (like canteen) which sales meals and beverages at Ragunan Zoological Park. They usually display the list of menu at the front side of the canteen.
  • It is best to prepare your own food and other picnic gear prior to your trip, and once you are in the park just enjoy your meal under the sheltering trees in the fresh air.
  • There are some photographers who like to take each visitors picture at the front gate of Ragunan Zoological Park. They will print the picture and offered to the visitors when the visitors leave the zoo. The photographers would not push visitors to buy. However you could ask them not to take your pictures if you don’t want to.
  • The best way to explore the Park is naturally on foot, but if you wish, you can rent a bike which is charged by the hour. You can also take the mini train to help you get around this extensive park.
  • Ragunan Zoological Park is usually crowded on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Between Saturday and Sunday, Sunday is usually the most crowded day at the park. The visitor won’t be too many on weekdays.
  • Remember anywhere in Jakarta put your bag in front if you are in crowd.

The animals were poorly malnourished. They were so skinny that the sight of it just make you sad. Went there for a date, coming home sad. :-(

A huge zoo with marvelous gardens but they seem to pay more attention to their gardens than their animals, they were very sad, dry and unkept. I wouldn't pay a penny to go. It's a totally disgrace!

This attraction is aimed at local Indonesians NOT tourists as the fee to get in is extremely cheap. Some of the animals have lots of room but others do not; some enclosures have lots of rubbish that have been thrown in. It is a huge zoo and is not well organised so hard to find everything. The fairly new primate section was the best part (you have to pay a little extra to get into this bit), the rest of the zoo needs updating like this but it is unlikely to happen as the zoo has no money to do this. Most locals use this attraction as a park for a picnic rather than a zoo. There are lots drink stations around to keep people hydrated as this is a hot and exposed place.

The varieties of the animal there is perfect! the zoo actually is quiet large so it's really good because that means we get to see more, and the entrance fee is damn cheap for a zoo!
