Why Queensbay Mall is special ?
Queensbay Mall is the largest and most popular shopping mall on the island of Penang. The mall is located strategically between Georgetown and Bayan Lepas (which includes major suburbs and the islands main airport). The mall was an instant hit immediately after opening in 2006. Every day the mall is visited by many locals, mainly youngsters. There are over 500 shops in total with Jusco as anchor tenant, spread out over 5 floors. Other anchor tenants within Queensbay are Golden Screen Cinemas, Harvey Norman and Borders).
What to explore at Queensbay Mall?
The five-storey Queensbay Mall has 10 anchor tenants, including Jusco, Borders and Harvey Norman, plus over 500 stores with brands such as MNG Mango, Liz Clairborne, Nichii, Quiksilver, British India, Gap, Timberland and Elle. There is an integrated entertainment zone on the third floor with a multi screen movie theatre (Golden Screen Cinemas), karaoke centre (Neway Karaoke Box) and more.
Some locals will tell you that acquiring bargains in Penang involves wandering the narrow streets and alleyways off Jalan Penang, Jalan Burmah and Lebuh Campbell. However, true Penangites will also tell you that the air-conditioned interior of Queensbay Mall makes for a far better shopping afternoon on the island.
Besides the fact that you will be shopping in comfort, the mall has almost the same selections of merchandise as anywhere else on the island. Bargains can be found without difficulty, especially during sale periods and Queensbay is one of the few places on the island where you can find designer brands.
How to get to Queensbay Mall?
As Queensbay Mall is not located nearby the main tourist attractions, tourists from Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Bungah and even Georgetown might have a hard time getting to the mall. The cheapest way to get to the mall is by bus. From Batu Ferringhi or Tanjung Bungah you first take the bus to Georgetown main bus terminal. From there you take the bus to Queensbay. The following Rapid Penang bus numbers stop at Queensbay Mall: T10 (from Komtar), T304 (from Gurney), U307 (from Prangin), U308 and U705.
Queensbay is only a 10 minute drive from Penang International Airport; so you could opt to visit the mall if you have some time to spare before your flight.
