Why Quan An Ngon is special ?

Quan An Ngon, the name “Ngon” means “Delicious”. What a simple but truly descriptive definition of the food here. The restaurant occupies a large area and there are many stalls on the way round so that the food can be ready to serve. The tiled roof and the trees feel peaceful and the design exactly imitates Hanoian old quarters. A con of the restaurant is that in hot summer noon there are only ceiling fans in the stalls and limited rooms are equipped with air-conditioners.

A variety of specialties and street food from three regions of Vietnam are served such as shrimp-mince pork grilled on the sugar cane, rice steam rolls, fried crab spring rolls, clams, shrimp, beef pho, fresh spring rolls.

Jetlagged on our first night in Hanoi, we went here on recommendation of our guide. The menu is substantial but comes with an English translation and helpful pictures of the many dishes. We ordered far too much. A light spiced beef dish was tender and tasty; the mixed fried rice a meal in its own right. Spring rolls were a little too aromatic for my palate but they were beautifully presented. One dish which had vegetables mixed into a giant rice pancake took a lot of putting together: a rice paper has greens put into it and the whole is wrapped around a slice of the fritter. Our waitress did a stalwart job showing us the way to prepare the rolls which are then dunked in a sauce. We were offered a take home bag for the amount we left behind but since the whole including a beer and Coke came to about £15, we demured. Service was speedy and willing. Food and the bill came quickly.
