Why Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is special ?

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is an important water temple on the shores of Danau Bratan (Lake Bratan). Built by the King of Mengwi in 1633 (who later built another water temple, Pura Taman Ayun) this picture-postcard temple is dedicated to the lake goddess, Dewi Danu, to ensure plentiful water and bountiful crops.

Set in the Bedugul Highlands, 1239m (ft) above sea level, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is one of Bali’s most photographed and iconic temples. Its thatched multi-roofed shrines (meru) are surrounded and reflected by the lake, and its misty mountain backdrop highlights its serene beauty.

What to explore at Pura Ulun Danu Bratan?

A banyan tree shades the temple entrance, which leads you through pretty gardens and past a Buddhist stupa to the lake and the main temple. On the shore of the lake are two multi-tiered merus and, if you hop in a canoe, you’ll find the Linga Petak fertility shrine in the lake itself.

After Pura Taman Ayun, we headed straight to the highland and the traffic wasn't really that bad. You need a sane driver though so that he could take in all the twists and turns patiently, and I can tell you that the road was narrow and could be dangerous otherwise. We passed rice terraces and many villages along the way. Then as it got cooler, we started seeing strawberry farms. My mom wanted to stop for some fruits but the driver told us straight up that the price would be touristy. There seemed to be several accommodations along the way and they did pique my interest. Then we saw the lake and it was like Shangri-La. It was a crater lake so it was filled up by rainwater and I was truly amazed by it all. Nothing was more fascinating for me at that point. So, we reached the parking lot and paid for our entry. There was a traditional procession with musicians and women in cultural get-ups. We didn't really know if it was something daily or that we were just lucky. It's true that it was quite crowded, but as we progressed down towards the lake, many had stopped and granted us our photo ops. Much thanks to them. We crossed the garden down to the procession but as soon as we got there, the music suddenly stopped. I think it was over but we were just glad to have actually seen them in action albeit a brief one. The edge of the lake was not cordoned off or chained so it was extremely dangerous especially for children. We got to the lake on a concrete wharf instead of by a beach and we could plunge straight down if we were not careful. So mind the children. As we walked along, after a turn, we came to the lake activity center. The big banyan tree would be opposite it halfway across the garden. Well, there sure were plenty to do there and you can read all about it here: http://www.ulundanuberatanbali.com/facilities/lake-activity Actually the 'pura' or the temple was on the left hand side, from the garden. So if you go right, you'll go to the boats. If you go left, you'll go to the temple. I think it was cute and small unlike the others but yet so significant that it ended up on the rupiah bill. I think we missed looking at the animals as we were looking forward to lunch. This lake is a must for all and you will not regret it. If you're looking at the romantic side of Bali, this is it!
