Nara city was Japan's first permanent capital (710-784), was then called "Heijo". Nara city lies in the north end of Nara Prefecture, directly bordering itself to Kyoto Prefecture in its north side, is a part of the Kansai region of Japan. Nara is also the birthplace of Japanese Buddhism, proclaimed by Prince Shotoku (A.D. 574–621), a great statesman and a devout Buddhist, at which time he declared Buddhism as the official religion. Prince Shotoku believed that only with Buddhist teachings could he make Japan a unified and culturally refined country. Prince Shotoku stressed that everyone should faithfully revere the Three Treasures (the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha) as the supreme and unmistakable guidance. Prince Shotoku also ordered the government to build many Buddhist temples among which the most famous is Horyu-ji temple, the world’s oldest wooden structure now standing near the former capital of Nara. We can see that in the beginning the introduction of Buddhism to Japan was highly motivated by political and cultural reasons. This influence and political ambitions of the city's powerful Buddhist monasteries grew which became a serious threat to the government, the capital was moved to Nagaoka in 784. Due to its past as the first permanent capital, it remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan's oldest and largest temples. Eight temples, shrines and ruins in Nara, specifically Tōdai-ji, Saidai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, Kasuga Shrine, Gangō-ji, Yakushi-ji, Tōshōdai-ji, and the Heijō Palace remains, together with Kasugayama Primeval Forest, collectively form "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara", a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
