Why Phou Asa Mountain is special ?
Phou Asa is reached by a short walk or elephant ride from the village along a forest trail. The summit opens out to provide a stunning view over large areas of southern Lao. The forests of Xe Pian and Dong Hua Sao NPAs appear to stretch out endlessly from the Kiet Ngong wetland. To the north is the Bolaven Plateau, and on a clear day waterfalls can be seen cascading from it. Ahead to the east is the Xe Khong floodplain in Attapeu, and lining the horizon is the Annamite Mountains on the Vietnamese border. At the top of the outcrop is a ring of stone pillars. Legends abound about these remains, but it is unknown if the structure was built for religious or military reasons.

Ban Kiet Ngong/Phou Asa /Xe Pian National Park/Elephant ride The elephant ride was something I was really looking forward to. So for me it was really enjoyable. I did feel a little guilty when our elephant was slowly heading up the climb, more so when I found out our elephant was 79yrs. But I am glad we did it, as it was an item on my bucket list. Okay the seats are not the most comfortable, but you are in Loas riding an elephant! The elephant handler tried telling us things in his limited English, which was lovely. Phou Asa, okay it is a very fallen ruin, and if you have already been to Cambodia and see the ruins, this won’t be too exciting for you. But as we started our tour in Loas and then going to Cambodia, it was the beginning of the ruins story for us. I am not sure what people expect at ruins, but they are ruins! Our guide also gave us the story of the ruins, so knowing a bit of history at what you are looking at helps. There is also the brilliant view that looks over part of Xe Pian National Park. They are also replanting along the path that the elephants take.
