Why Old Market Area is special ?

The Old Market (Phsar Chas) area, including the nearby Pub Street, Pub Street alleys and the Night Markets, are favorites when visiting Siem Reap. Stretching from the river to the night markets on Sivutha Blvd, the entire area is now the dining, shopping and nightlife center of town. Sok San Road, opposite the Old Market area has become quite popular as well, sporting dozens of budget-friendly business, especially guesthouses, bars and restaurants.

Curios at the Old Market, Siem ReapOf all the traditional Cambodian markets in Siem Reap, the Old Market offers the deepest selection of souvenirs and curios. There are souvenir vendors throughout much the market, especially on the river side. The north side along Street 9 sports a number of inexpensive food stalls serving Cambodian fare in an interesting, local atmosphere. A good place for a budget meal and a taste of Cambodian street food.

Pub Street, Siem Reap, CambodiaThese days Pub Street is lined end to end with restaurants, pubs and shops, making it the tourist center of town, especially after dark. The narrow connecting alleys and passages just off Pub Street have also filled with small The Passage, Pub Street Alley, Siem Reapbusinesses, offering a somewhat quieter and more relaxed ambiance the ever-bustling Pub Street.

Bamboo sticky rice

Lam rice is made from sticky rice which is grown on the hills. Sticky rice is put in a bamboo pipe and added some water. For more flavor, ethnic people usually use stream water and add some salt in.

Chilli fried insects

It’s deep fried and coated in something that seems to be a mix of salt, herbs and chilli, spindly legs neatly folded between a big, hard shelled body.

Cambodian BBQ

Having visited Siem Reap last year, we were happy to once again get back into the alleyways of Psar Chaa and barter for a bargain. Love a good market! It is hot and steamy in there but there's no hurry and there are some great things to buy. Yes it's hot, smelly and sweaty but you really have to dig in and do this! All prices are very negotiable and are compatible if not cheaper than the shops on the outside. I purchased a Buddha for $32 on a shop outside after much haggling - then saw the exact same one in the market starting price $25! Annoyed! Great for holiday momentos etc

Cambodia has the best bargains in Asia, and this market is very cheap and friendly. The stallholders are always smiling and happy to bargain, particularly if you buy multiple items. A young man running a small silver store towards the middle of the market was incredibly lovely to deal with, and a lady selling books near the corner by the river also sold geniuine books for less than $5, 5 times cheaper than what book shops were selling the same books for. They are genuine books, and not the fake ones you read about in guidebooks. We bought Tops for $3, Singlets $2, silver bracelets $6 and rings for about $7. Everythings already cheap so we didnt feel the need to bargain that much. Do NOT accept ripped notes of money, as they are literally considered worthless and will not be accepted by shop keepers. No one at this market tried to give us ripped notes, but other shopkeepers elsewhere did and then you cant spend it. so just be wary :) TukTuk drivers are everywhere so no problem getting back to your hotel. Market seems to be open almost all day which is great, as we were able to go early morning and late afternoon and still shop around.

Very organized -- they have the food, art, and fashion set in different sections. Be careful with remork drivers as they tend to be assertive on getting tourists to take their ride.
