Why Ngahtatgyi Paya is special ?

Nga Htat Gyi Pagoda or the Ngar Htat Gyi Pagoda is one of the major tourist attractions in Yangon and a popular temple of the Buddhist devotees in Myanmar. Nga Htat Gyi means ‘five-storey Buddha’ and is situated across the Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha, which is the reclining one. The Ashay Tawya Monastery is home to this huge seated Buddha sculpture which is placed on an iron structured pavilion with a 5 tiered CGI roof. Therefore, the name Nga Htat Gyi Pagoda was derived from the structure which literally meant 5 layered roof. The style in which Magite or armors have been used in this image distinguishes it from other huge Buddha structures.

Prince Minyedeippa donated the original Nga Htat Gyi Buddha in 1558. It was the image of a seated Buddha around 20.5 feet tall. This seated Buddha was brought in this pagoda where its height was increased to an imposing 45.5 feet and placed on a high pedestal of 30feet length and 46feet breadth. This is one of the largest and highest Buddha images in a shrine in Myanmar. This alteration was done in the year 1900.

Bahan Township is the home of the Nga Htat Gyi Pagoda. This township comprises of a huge monastery complex and the temple is a part of this complex located in Shwegonedaing ward. Reaching this pagoda is easy. Take the road encircling the Royal Lakes leading into a lane bearing the name and you can arrive at the Nga Htat Gyi Pagoda. There is another route as well which is shorter than the former one. You can take the Shwegonedaing road connecting the Tamwe and Bahan Townships leading up to the pagoda. This is a direct route that will take you to the entrance of the pagoda. You will be overwhelmed with respect as you see the imposing Buddha image.

What to explore at Ngahtatgyi Paya?

Inside the five-tiered wooden pagoda building is an impressive seated Buddha. Sitting almost 14 meters tall (45.5 ft) on its pedestal and the same distance wide, the white Buddha is beautifully adorned in gold and precious gems.

Looking down serenely on the devotees from high up on its platform, the Ngahtatgyi Buddha is striking in appearance, framed by its exquisite gold crown and unusual gold body “armor.” The ceiling and wall behind the Buddha are intricately carved, and there are paintings and other artworks within the complex. Chinthe guardian lions greet visitors at the paya entrance.

The original Buddha image on this site at the Monastery dates back to 1558. The Ngahtatgyi Buddha replaced that image in 1901.

The Ashay Tawya Monastery, where the Ngahtatgyi Paya is housed, backs on to Shwe Gon Taing Street, where the Chaukhtatgyi is also located, just across the road. You can also get to it from the top of Kandawgyi Lake by following Ngahtatgyi Pagoda Street, which will take you to the front entrance of the monastery.

This temple is just across the road from Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha (the giant buddha) so take a taxi and ask the driver to take you to both and wait. You will not be disappointed. The main statue is breathtaking and the other sculptures and artwork are extremely interesting. Recommended
