Why Narukawa Art Museum is special ?
Narukawa Art Museum stands on a small hill, surrounded by trees. During your visit, take a moment to walk out of the Panorama Lounge at the front of the museum and take a stroll in the garden. From here, you can enjoy the best view of Hakone.
More than 4000 traditional Japanese paintings have been collected in the Narukawa Art Museum. Each exhibition room is wide and relaxing. In addition, the observatory lounge of the museum has a breathtaking view of the best combination of Ashino-ko Lake and Mt. Fuji you will ever see. You can enjoy a wonderful panorama from a 50-meter long glass covered observatory avoiding wind, cold and strong sunshine, or go out in the garden and enjoy the view from there.

What to explore at Narukawa Art Museum?
Beside the entrance to the museum, a statue of the Buddhist bodhisattva Jizo stands guard. Sugi (Japanese cedar) trees inhabit the garden.
The Japanese cedar grows to 40 meters in height, and one specimen, known as Jomon Sugi, on the southern island of Yakushima, is some 3,000 to 7,000 years old. The museum’s own Daio Sugi (Great King Cedar) is estimated to be around 3,000 years old.
In addition to Japanese art, you will be impressed by the magnificent views through the panorama windows towards Lake Ashi, and, if you are lucky weatherwise, you can see Mount Fuji. The museum has a nice café and a little garden with lovely views to the lake and a good museum shop.

Reviews
It was surprising to realize as first time visitors to Hakone area, that in its numerous art museums Western art appears to be more on offer than Japanese. The Narukawa Art Museum in Motohakone is a delightful exception, with an interesting selection of its vast collections of modern Japanese art. The collections on display are not extensive but well selected. The museum is located at the very heart of the lakeside village Motohakone, in an elegant modern building well landscaped on the leafy hillside. An escalator from street level leads to the entrance. In addition to Japanese art we were impressed by the magnificent views through the panorama windows towards Lake Ashi, and, if you are lucky weatherwise, you can see Mount Fuji. You could sit and admire the view for hours! The museum has a nice café and a little garden with lovely views to the lake and a good museum shop. Highly recommended!
