Why Museum of the Holy House of Mercy is special ?

The Holy House offers a wide range of regular social-service facilities such as The Our Lady of Mercy Home for the Elderly, The Creche of the Macau Holy House of Mercy, and the Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind. As a matter of fact, the Holy House started to provide services for the elderly in Macau more than a century ago. The former Shelter House, also popularly known as the Old Ladies' House, which once operated as a refuge for homeless and helpless women, has been converted into a Macau's newest cultural activities centre.

As an active member of Macau's civil society, the Holy House of Mercy does nowadays serve the citizens of the Special Administrative Region with a renewed spirit and energy, reflected on the highly praised restoration of its historical building right in the middle of the historical centre of the city, and already included as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

You won't miss this white building as you are walking at the Senado Square. Before you reach the entrance of the museum (on your right side), you will first see a picturesque small lane right next to this white building. When you looked into this lane, it made you feel as if you have been transported to some old buildings at the European countries. Definitely a photo opp moment but also good for a quick walk up and down to see the surrounding building structure and design too. Onto the museum, the main entrance is more than enough to enchant you to walk if you are on who are into historical building and architectural design. There are so many artefacts to see and you can check the items one by one by reading the descriptions provided on the visitor booklet. I think it is great that the museum is managed by the elderly. When I went there I was greeted by an elderly man who not only provide guidance on the areas to look at but also put a visit stamp on my ticket for keepsakes. Also do not forget to step out to the verandah area as you can sit and relax there as well. You can also have a good view of the surrounding of the Senado Square - another good photo opp and do some people watching too ;) All these for just MOP5!

Being interested in colonial art, I thoroughly enjoyed some quiet time looking at the collection of Jesuit artefacts particularly the religious statues, ceramics, and finely crafted relief stamps. The house is well preserved and the collection well-curated. I wish more visitors in Macau take time to go over this collection.
