Why Museum of Contemporary Art is special ?

The history of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo's collection dates back to 1926 when the Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum first opened in Ueno Park. The activities of this institution were inherited by the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, which built up a collection of approximately 3,000 art works that was in turn passed on to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo when it opened. Today, this collection, together with other newly acquired numerous works, from both Japan and abroad, is utilized as the 'MOT Collection'.

In addition to systematically collecting postwar art from a historical viewpoint, we also work positively to gather works by young artists that provide a well-defined view of current trends in art, and the collection currently contains as many as 4,800 works. One of the greatest attractions of the MOT Collection is that it focuses on pioneering works that created the innovative trends in different periods. To collect works on a regular basis and preserve them for future generations can be said to be one of the fundamental activities of a museum.

These works, that have been gathered over the years, form the basis of the 'MOT Collection' exhibitions that are held three to four times annually in the museum's Permanent Collection Gallery. Each exhibition is based on a particular, unique theme and introduces between 100 and 200 works from our huge collection.

Some of the BEST things to do on a rainy day for a tourist, is to visit the musuem. As it turns out, it is also one of the best things to do for the locals. The museum is crowded on Sept 30 2010. We decided to pay JPY1750 per person to see ALL the exhibits, permanent and temporary. LOCATION This museum is located at the KOTO ward, outside of the Yamanote Line. The best way to reach the museum is by subway, in which you need to walk for at least 9 mins. There is also a public garden next to the Museum, which you can visit if it is not raining. MUSEUM DESIGN The lovely part of visiting contemporary museums is that the museum in itself is a lovely design and this is no exception. I wish more museums (including this one) would devote some literature as to who design their museums, and the premise behind the design. The Guggenheim museums do a pretty good job with that. The architecture of this building incorporated circles, square, rectangular and triangle metal arches. To throw in "fun" multi-colour sofas where lined along the hallway. You can see the modern Japanese architectural lines infused into the design as well. EXHIBITS We were extremely blessed because during our visit, there is an exhibition by Karigurashi no Arietty & Yohei Taneda, entitled "Fusing Fantasy With Reality". This saves me a trip to Ghibili Museum, which I always wanted to visit . Watching the 3-D exhibit puts a smile on my face. You feel like visiting Alice in Wonderland. There is also exhibits which encourages the development of art amongst children and I think the museum does a great job running programs for this. The permanent exhibits are also interesting. CONCLUSION I would highly recommend a visit to this museum if 1. you are frequent visit to Tokyo and have already done all the touristy spots. 2. you are a fan of the modern/contemporary art. 3. If you have children (below 10) and you want to cultivate arts in them
