Why Monkey Park (Mount Takao) is special ?

The Monkey Park is located in Mt. Takao. The Wildflower Garden is also in this mountain. You can enjoy both the park and the garden with one ticket.

In Monkey Park, about 60 monkeys live in a group and you can see them up close. The park is famous for park docents who present humorous talk shows about rules and daily life of monkey society and answer questions from visitors. Each monkey of the park has his or her own name and is full of character. Some monkeys respond when called out their name and others perform tightrope stunts.

What to explore at Monkey Park (Mount Takao)?

Although just watching the monkeys is great fun in itself, you can derive even greater enjoyment from the experience if you know something about monkeys, such as their peculiar physical characteristics and what their individual movements express.

An attendant is always present at the park and will explain (in Japanese only) the relationships and social order found in monkey communities and how they are similar to those of humans. The attendant will also take questions from visitors.

The monkeys each have their own individual names and some will respond when called by their names. You can try to call them.

You can admire some little tricks of each one such as jumping from a branch or a pole towards the attendant when summoned, or even perform a tightrope walk worthy of a circus act.

How to get to Monkey Park (Mount Takao)?

Keio Railways offer the cheapest and fastest connections to Takaosan. Direct semi-limited express trains, which take about 50 minutes and 390 yen, leave the underground Keio Shinjuku station every 20 minutes. Takaosanguchi Station, the train's terminal station, is located at the foot of the mountain.

Alternatively, the JR Chuo Line connects Shinjuku to Takao Station (550 yen, about 40 minutes), where you must transfer to the Keio Line and ride one more station to Takaosanguchi Station (130 yen, 3 minutes).
