Why Lorong Selamat is special ?
Once a mainly residential avenue, Lorong Selamat has over the past few decades seen an increase in commercial activities, as some of the townhouses along the road are converted into shops and offices. There are also a number of coffee shops and restaurants opening in the area, turning Lorong Selamat into a street-food haven.
Must try dish:
Char kway teow - a popular dish that basically consists of flat rice noodles stir-fried with light and dark soy sauce, chilli, cockles, prawns, and bean sprouts. In this dish, a mixture of flat rice noodles and egg noodles will be also commonly stir-fried with eggs, cockles, lap cheong (Chinese sausages), and Chinese chives.
Lor Bak - otherwise known as five-spice pork rolls, is served with deep fried prawn fritters and beancurd.
Curry Chee Cheong Fun - made of rice noodle, doused in a curry gravy that is not very spicy, and also has cockles and fried bean curd added to it.

Reviews
This char kway Teow staff was managed by a few staff so I didn't talk to the supposedly "arrogant" Aunty. We waited a while for the food to come but the service was ok. Not rude at all. We came expecting it to be really fantastic because of the reviews and we were not disappointed. It had a good wok hei flavour and was definitely tasty. Work of an experienced chef! Only thing is that it is rather pricey and there was too little kway teow i feel. Portion could be a bit bigger. But overall, def worth travelling there to try it! There is another char kway Teow stall down the street at the end (towards Lor MacAlister) at Yi Garden coffeeshop called Penny Char Kway Teow, which supposedly won the 2012 Penang hawkers' challenge. I didn't try it but i think it should be good too. Worth a try I think. Along the same street (Lor Selamat) we came across T&T Penang Hokkien prawn noodles and it was excellent. The broth was very rich and thick with just the right amount of taste and spice. Highly recommended!! They are on Facebook I think. In Chinese it's called 虾面之家。
This has to be the best 'char kuih teow' (fried flat noodles) in Penang, but be prepared to wait for at least 20-40 mins during holiday season or weekends. I normally order one with mild chili as I find medium too spicy. It comes with 3-4 large prawns and it worth the RM10/- per plate. Give it a try!
