Why Lake Kawaguchiko (Fuji Five Lakes) is special ?

Lake Kawaguchi (河口湖 Kawaguchi-ko?) is located in Fujikawaguchiko, southern Yamanashi Prefecture near Mount Fuji, Japan. It is the second largest of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of surface area, and is located at the lowest elevation. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 800 metres, which accounts for its relatively cool summers and frequently icy winters. It also has the longest shoreline of any of the Fuji Five Lakes.

It is the most easily accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes with train and direct bus connections to Tokyo. A hot spring resort town with various tourist attractions and views of Mount Fuji is located around the lake's eastern end, while the northern and western shores are mostly undeveloped.

What to explore at Lake Kawaguchiko (Fuji Five Lakes)?

The best views of Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from the lake's northern shores and are particularly breathtaking during the cherry blossom season around mid April and the autumn colors around the first half of November. One of the nicest spots for cherry blossoms is the seaside promenade near the Kawaguchiko Music Forest, while photographers will enjoy the "Koyo Tunnel" for autumn colors, a maple tree covered road section along the lake's northern shore.

Be warned that even though Kawaguchiko is located right at the base of Mount Fuji, the mountain is not always visible because of clouds. Visibility tends to be best in the early mornings (usually before 9am) and in the late afternoons, while clouds often obstruct the view during daytime even on days with fair weather, and especially so during the hazy summer months.

Among the wide range of other tourist attractions available around Lake Kawaguchiko are hot spring baths, various museums, the Fuji Q amusement park, boat tours and a ropeway leading onto a small mountain next to the lake. Kawaguchiko is also a good base for climbing Mount Fuji, although most people start their ascent from Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station halfway up the mountain these days.

How to get to Lake Kawaguchiko (Fuji Five Lakes)?

Kawaguchiko Station is the terminal station of the Fujikyu Railway from Otsuki. The bus terminal for local buses and highway buses to/from Tokyo, Kofu, Gotemba and other destinations is located just in front of the station.

From Kawaguchiko Station, two retro bus lines provide tourists with local transportation around Lake Kawaguchiko and neighboring Lake Saiko: The Kawaguchiko Line operates along Lake Kawaguchi's eastern and northeastern shores, while the Saiko Line operates along Lake Kawaguchiko's southern shore and around Lake Saiko.

  • Don't forget to bring jackets and your camera.
    What to bring
  • It's better to go early for a clear view.
  • Don't forget to check weather forecast before your trip. It can be sunny in your hotel (Tokyo) but the weather can turn bad in Kawaguchiko.
    What need to do
  • It's better to buy the scenic boat, cable car and bus ride combined ticket because that saved you a lot of money.
  • Be aware if you go by bus in this area. The bus system here doesn't work as good as it is in Osaka or Tokyo. The bus driver can skip some stations so it's better for you to ask them for 2 times at the place you want to stop.

“Beautiful Natural Getaway” It was a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. We intended to see Mt Fuji but unfortunately it was cloudy and we werent able to. The saving grace was that it started to snow on the second day! We got to Kawaguchiko Lake by catching the Highway bus from Shinjuku and it only took 2 hours. Less annoying than changing trains and I think it was slightly chepaer! Although i recommend reserving seats ahead. I highly recommend buying the scenic boat, cable car and bus ride combined ticket because that saved us heaps of money. The boat ride was good bit freezing and we got to see nothing. The cable car trip up Kachikachi mountain was really good. After the ride to the cable car, we also hiked up to the top of the mountain. There is a really small shrine and it was really cool. The bus is unreliable but it is still useful. We went and watched the monkey show which was pretty cool. The ice cave was average but due to its close proximity to the Aokigahara (Sea of Tree) we walked 200 to 300m into the forest and it was really quiet and beautiful. Highly recommend it!
