Why Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) is special ?

Lake Ashi, also referred to as Hakone Lake or Ashinoko Lake, is a scenic lake in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshū, Japan. It is a crater lake that lies along the southwest wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, a complex volcano that last erupted in 1170 CE at Owakudani. The lake is known for its views of Mt. Fuji, its numerous hot springs, historical sites, and ryokan. The lake is located on the Tokaido road, the main link between Kyoto and Tokyo. A number of pleasure boats and ferries traverse the lake, providing scenic views for tourists and passengers. Several of the boats are inspired by the design of sailing warships.

What to explore at Lake Ashi (Ashinoko)?

The Lake Ashi area offers walks and hikes for all levels. We are in the heart of a National Forest and the options are endless. You can hike the crater of a dormant volcano, walk the lazy shores, stroll town, or visit the historical sites. The town is compact and most sites are easily accessible by foot. For those looking for a challenge, day hikes are available up the peaks and around the crater. We encourage you to follow the footsteps of the travelers who have proceeded you in the centuries before. A great idea is to hike one way and take a boat or bus back to your starting point!

Had a cruise in the Pirate ship from Togendai to Moto-Hakone through Hokone-machi and back to Togendai. The cruise was so cold with frozen winds in late April. The ships depart every 30 minutes. Had lunch at Hakone-machi restaurant and around was filled with Cherry blossoms. The cruise was an amazing experience.
