Tips for you
Finding the restaurant is a little tricky so you should walk up Kiyamachi street on the right side of street (canal on your left side) and look for the picture of egg & beef. It will be at entrance of a long skinny alleyway with lanterns on the ground - walk down that alley, halfway down you'll see window into their kitchen & busy chefs at work.Location
We are in Kyoto for 5 days, and have selected our lunch and dinner places carefully. This was the first one on my list. We asked our hotel (New Miyako - very good hotel by the way) to book a number of restaurants for us, which was a real help. We've chosen the branch in Kiyamachi, which was right by the river and very popular. When we got there on a Saturday night at 7pm, the restaurant was obviously fully booked. We got seated inside but had views of the outdoor seating that was right by the river. Most clientile was Japanese. The English menu they showed us did not have all the specials - instead I asked whether they had a special Chef's menu for 2 people, and they said yes and offered us the Y6980 one, which had 5 different cuts of beef (tongue, cheek, thigh, arm and ribs) and it was a very decent amount of meat. They were all of really good quality, tasted differently (as they were marinated in different sauces and prepared in different ways). Some nice fresh vegetable also came with the set. Husband was really satisfied with the meat and enjoyed the cooking...with beer, coke and a couple of green tea ice creams, the bill came to a very reasonable Y8500. This was our first meal in Kyoto in this trip and I must say it had set a very high bar! Highly recommend to all (including those with kiddies - saw quite a few Japanese kids there).
