Tips for you
Tiny place. Not meant for tourists, but that's the good part of it! Just one of the staff could speak some English and somehow we managed to get something to eat. The dishes are amazing. They have very fresh sashimi and moreover some other meat and vegetarian dishes. The octopus is terrific. The sake served is from the region. Very friendly atmosphere. Even if none of the Japanese people that were there eating were able to speak English, we ended drinking sake all together laughing and trying to communicate somehow.
Really nice local pub, with excellent "basic" food and exceptional service. We came here via a recommendation online. The place is quite hidden and we were a bit unsure at first whether to go in. I'm glad we did, cause we had a great time. According to the owner, this establishment has been in the family for over 60 years. The room feels simple but dignified. The food was very good and reasonably priced in our opinion. We had two glasses of local sake, two beers, 6 items from the daily menu (including tuna, salmon and squid sashimi & beef strips) as well as 4 "oden", cooked vegetables and fish. This cost us 7600 in total for 2 persons, a fair price in Nara I would say. Most notably, the service was exceptionally good. To our astonishment, given how off the beaten track this place is, the owner and several waiters spoke decent English. They translated the daily menu for us and were helpful in choosing options. We even had a nice chat in the end! Overall, I would very much recommend "Kuru" if you're in Nara, you won't regret it.
