This was our second visit to Kok Chang and it was every bit as good as we remembered from last year, we opted for the 50 minute trek this year and can highly recommended it the view from the top is amazing....ocean views both ways and the serenity is fantastic the elephants are well cared for and respond to spoken requests from their mahout so that for a lot of the trip he just walks nearby while taking lots of (very good )photos for you, you also have the option of riding home on the elephants neck, how good is that? Don't go here if you expect to see elephants painting and performing but if you want a truly magical experience in a natural setting this is the place to go. As an added bonus they will pick you up and return you from hotels in most areas free of charge.

Great thing to do while in Phuket, the elephants are fantastic and the handlers are very friendly and take lots of photos for you to remember the experience. They pretty much control the elephant with spoken commands, and you can sit up front while they walk beside.

We chose the Koh Chang Elephant trek ride after reading various reviews, and were not disappointed. Our pickup was right on time, once arriving at the elephant park we were able to pay and hop on the elephant at our leisure...it was looking very gloomy so they suggested we could wait a while if we liked. Once on board and over the fear that every step was going to tip us off we were set out on a trek up hill through the mud for an awesome experience. Initially I was disappointed we were right behind another elephant, however this turned into a great experience as we could see how the front elephant negotiated its footing and manouvered its way up the mountain. It was going great until the heavens opened...and got REALLY windy (we were then told the elephants do not like really heavy winds and hopefully he would not start running - we agreed :)the rain and strong winds meant there was no photo opportunity at the summit and since it was so the windy we could not sit on the elephants head on the way down, disappointing but in no way the operators fault. The guide could not have been more obliging - half way down the trek he jumped off and took many photos with our camera for us, which have all turned out to be keepers. When we got back to the loading platform we were able to ake photos 'riding' the elephant and once giving a voluntary donation (not mandatory) could hand feed the elephants bananas. Our driver had waitied for us during the trek and was more than happy for us to ogle and ooh and aah for as long as we liked. A great trip which I would recommend, we got a 50 minute trek, loads of photos and some wonderful memories we will never forget for about $40NZD each.
