Why Ippodo Tea Kyoto is special ?

Located in the heart of Kyoto, Ippodo Tea Co. has been providing the highest quality Japanese green tea for nearly 3 centuries. More than just a retailer, Ippodo is a multi-faceted tea company directly involved in the procurement and blending of carefully selected tea leaves. Our teas are of the finest class, cultivated in the lush fields of Kyoto and the surrounding area. This region is renowned for producing the highest grade of green tea in Japan, thanks largely to its mild misty climate, mineral-rich soil and near-perfect balance of sunshine and rainfall.

Just as tea is blessed by Mother Nature, it is subject to her varying weather patterns. Overcoming these variations is a major hurdle for tea producers trying to provide a consistent flavor. Yet, providing a consistent flavor is Ippodo's forte. Drawing on nearly 300 years of expertise in blending, Ippodo is famous among its patrons for providing a high quality taste that is consistent not only throughout the year but from year to year.

What to explore at Ippodo Tea Kyoto?

Ippodo has many, many kinds of tea, from cheap to very expensive. They are all excellent. Ippodo supplies detailed instructions in English regarding how to brew each tea properly. The translations are professional and proper, understandable English. Ippodo even gives a free measuring spoon with all purchases in order to make sure that the customers are able to measure out the right amount of tea at home.

The Kaboku Tearoom, recently renovated serves a wonderful assortment of Ippodo’s teas. Kaboku Tearoom is accessed via the main door of Ippodo, to the back of the store and to the right.

K. F. PekoPeko has a personal favorite and that is the KoichaMaccha. Koi means thick or stong. Cha, of course is tea. Maccha is the powdered green tea used in the Japanese tea ceremony.

Ippodo is more than just a tea shop. Right next to the shopfront is a tea cafe. This is where you can order different varieties of Japanese tea and have a hand at making them yourself. The four of us went for different types of tea and opted to make them ourselves. (You can choose to have the staff prepare them, but what's the fun in that?) Your tea powder / leaves is brought to the table along with a hot water flask and you will be given instructions on how to prepare your tea. Whip out the video cams at this point! Along with each tea set, you'll also be served a sweet mochi cake that complements the tea you ordered. Enjoy the tea and if you fancy buying some home, just purchase them after you're done at the cafe. A great local experience, good for when you've done enough shopping or sight-seeing and want to just chill out for a bit of tea and rest the weary feet.
