Why Hin Lad Waterfall is special ?
The Hin Lad Waterfall and Temple (also known as Wat Namtok) is a tranquil little oasis located on the popular island of Koh Samui in southern Thailand. Set within a lush tropical environment that is also known for the gorgeous spring flowers; the area is also home to a variety of unique fauna and flora. This beautiful waterfall has the added feature of being located just 3 kilometres south of the administrative town known as Nathon.
While Hin Lad Waterfall is smaller than say the Ban Thurian Waterfall (which includes an impressive 80 metre drop), it has the benefit of being accessible for most people regardless of their fitness level. In fact, the lush green landscape means that this place is perfect for both picnics and hiking or for people looking for an alternate activity to the popular Koh Samui beaches and water sports.

What to explore at Hin Lad Waterfall?
The stunning Hin Lad Waterfall is a gorgeous site, featuring a dense jungle path which spans 3km. Visitors mostly come here during the rainy season as the waterfall becomes larger and is at its best.
The lush setting of the Hin Lad Waterfall is perfect for a quiet picnic and a bit of relaxation. This beautiful lush terrain is also known for its dazzling spring flowers and visitors come here to enjoy hiking along the jungle paths.
Visitors will be happy to know that there is an elephant reserve near the waterfall. Visitors are welcome here to enjoy an elephant ride and take a trek to other nearby locations. Alternatively, you can also take an elephant ride to the nearby Koh Samui Jungle. Here, there is a beautiful waterfall where visitors can take a cool swim after a long trek through the jungle.
The area also boasts a temple known as the Hin Lad Waterfall Temple. Set within the evergreen jungle of Koh Samui, this famous temple is visited by many tourists all throughout the year. The temple’s tranquil and peaceful setting is perfect for those who want to relax and unwind. Also, explore the temple and its lovely garden, which boasts Buddha’s images, sculptures as well as a walking path that leads to a meditation area.
How to get to Hin Lad Waterfall?
The best way to travel from Bangkok to Koh Samui is by plane. Samui International Airport which is privately owned by Bangkok Airways would have to be the most beautiful in southern Thailand. Opened in April 1989, the airport is located along the northern part of Koh Samui near Bophut Beach. Its airstrip measures 2,100 metres in length and the main terminal was designed to blend in with the island's natural flora and fauna.
Once inside the terminal travelers can relax and enjoy fine dining in an open air Thai restaurant while other facilities include a post office and a souvenir shop. Traditional Thai massage and spa facilities are also available within this tranquil setting.
A number of carriers including Thai and Bangkok Airways fly to Samui International Airport.

Reviews
I think this is as much about a nice hike through a jungle and coming out onto a waterfall area rather than just being about the waterfall itself. As waterfalls go its not that impressive but combined the walk, the sound of the river as you go and the very very few tourists (I met 5 people over the 4km return walk) makes it a nice walk. I saw loads of butterflies, some frogs (it had just been raining) and a massive BOP (Bird of Prey) who was sitting on the path in front of me. No idea what it was but with 1-1.5m wing span it was very impressive. It was fun and not too tough going even when wet.
I didn't think me and my friends had time to visit both big waterfalls on Koh Samui so based on the reviews I read we discounted this one and headed for the Namuang (which wasn't sign posted that well for first timers on the island- and so we accidentally went to Hin Lad instead). It's a much different walk, kind of a jungle track but pretty easy whereas Namuang is quite a climb! There wasn't rubbish everywhere as I had read and just a few stalls selling fruit and chicken. The place was beautiful and water was refreshing- not a stand under waterfall scene from a herbal essence advert- more of a nice walk to see something other than the beach on Koh Samui. We saw many different butterflies and a snake just casually sat on a rock. Maybe it was the time of year but we barely saw any people once we started walking whereas Numuang has the elephant trekking and water slide. Depends what you want I guess but don't discount Hin Lad because you won't get the massive beautiful views you can see from te top of Numuang but if you're lucky it will be quite and you'll see a little bit of unspoilt nature.
We went to the waterfall today. The climb through the forest was nice and easy despite of the rain. On our way back we decided to have a look at the Hin Lad Temple, where the dog suddenly attacked and bitten me (white dog)! We did absolutely nothing to provoke it, so be careful crossing the bridge at the entrace (now I have to make anti-rabbies vaccination course).
