Han Jiang Ancestral Temple

As we entered we were filled by a peaceful contrast to the busy streets and scorching sun outside. When we entered we were the only ones inside except the guard. No entrance fee. You'll be able to walk around on your own to look at all the arts and symbols that make out this temple. Information is available also in english on the posters on the wall.

Stepping in from the street we Immediately felt the quiet peace of this temple. The gates seem to separate the modern world from this peaceful sanctuary. Free from those horrible crowds at Khoo Kongsi, the Han Jiang Ancestral Temple is much less in terms of bright lights & infamy but much more in terms of spirituality & reflection. Just like in any kung-fu movie, an old Chinese man with no English is the lone watcher leaving you alone to wander in peace. Women of all sizes, faiths & clothing are welcome, even the indecent ones. There are information signs towards the alter in English with insights into Teochew culture, Taoist spirituality & the restoration project, even better, its free to enter. Originally known as the Teochew Kongsi in 1870 it changed its name to the Han Jiang Ancestral Temple in 1930. It features an alter to the Teochew patron deity, the Taoist god of the North, Xuan Wu, also known as the Dark Warrior. The alter is also surrounded by gold ancestral tablets, in fact the entire layout of the temple is structured & neat, there is little clutter. The temple features 3 pairs of doors in high quality wood finishing which ozzes culture. In 2004 a community of local Teochew commissioned a major restoration project to restore the temple to its former glory sourcing craftsman from China.
