Why Gunung Raya is special ?

Gunung Raya is Langkawi's highest peak at around 872m (2,860 feet). This makes it the 225th tallest on my list of 300 Highest Malaysian Mountains.

It is one of the easiest to ascend because you can drive all the way up. If you prefer the exercise you can walk up - details below.

The mountain is roughly in the centre of the island and, from its peak, visitors can enjoy superb views over the whole of Langkawi and the surrounding seas.

There is a rather far-fetched local legend that the mountain is the petrified remains of a giant, a myth probably conceived in those far-off days when the natives used to sit around the fire and drink too much coconut toddy.

What to explore at Gunung Raya?

During the day time also you can see many animals and bird life like the leaf monkeys, macaque monkeys, eagles like mountain hawk eagles & white bellied sea eagles, great hornbills etc. The great hornbills are the largest birds in Langkawi and can measure up to 1.3 meters from the beak to the tail end.

As you drive, you won't get much views for most part because of the lush foliage and forests on both sides of the road. However there are look out points on the way, but they are not very well maintained. The drive is however quite scenic and enjoyable. Look for the wildlife as you drive up to the summit. Early in the morning, you are almost guaranteed to see many wildlife and birds.

The peak is essentially a granite formation. There is a resort on top known as the D'Coconut Hill Resort. On a clear day, you get awesome panoramic view of the island and the Andaman sea from the peak. There is a watch tower that belongs to the resort but also open to the public. The admission fee to the tower for public is RM10 per person.

In order to get the best views, you will need to go to the top of the watch tower. There is an elevator to take you to the top. If you haven't made it to the peak of Mount Mat Cingcang by taking the cable car ride from Oriental Village, then the peak of Gunung Raya can give you an equivalent experience to enjoy lovely view of the island and rainforests from top.

From the top of the tower, you get a 360 degree view of Langkawi, the Andaman sea and even the mainland of Thailand. The resort offers complimentary Chinese Tea which is included in the entry charge. You can relax in the open and have the tea as you enjoy the view from the tower. The sunset view from here is absolutely stunning.

How to get to Gunung Raya?

Easiest is to take a rental car or a taxi. You will need to take the narrow winding road Jalan Gunung Raya that starts from a junction with Jalan Ulu Melaka. The road to the peak goes through a dense forest, however the drive is easy as the gradient is not too steep. But watch out for the cars coming from the other side, particularly during the turns. It takes about 25 to 30 minutes to reach the peak by car from the foot hill. Taxis usually take RM60 one way from Pantai Cenang or Kuah.

This is the second time we drove up Gunung Raya. it is a nice drive and you can have a impressive view from the top. Don't press on to the end of the road; you will be stopped by the gates to the Telecom Malaysia facilities. When you take the road to the left, then you arrive at D'Coconut Resort, which includes a watch tower, where you can enjoy a better view for 10 ringgits per person admission fee (See my review). But bird spotting is also possible along the road. After we heard the call of the large hornbill, we saw the bird taking of and fly along the trees. It was so quiet, that we could hear the swish-swish of its large wings. Furthermore, we spotted along the road kingfishers, woodpeckers etc. When driving along the road, be aware of the bands of macaque monkeys; they are very aggressive, keep the doors and windows of the car closed. One monkey let himself dangle from the outside rear view mirror. As alternative to driving, you can take a staircase with 4287 steps to the top.

Highest peak of Langkawi with nice 360 degrees view of Langkawi and sometimes Thailand when the sky is clear. The road towards the mountain is not in good condition. It's worth to wait for sunset.
