Why Golden Bauhinia Square is special ?

Golden Bauhinia Square is the emblem of Hong Kong. The Forever Blooming Bauhinia Sculpture that gives the Expo Promenade the commonly-used name, Golden Bauhinia Square, was a gift from the Central Government to mark the 1997 Handover -- an occasion that held tremendous significance for the world’s largest nation and that stands out as a landmark event in 20th century history.

Today the site is hugely popular with Chinese visitors who come to take photos of the Reunification Monument, which bears inscriptions of the calligraphy of President Jiang Zemin who represented China at the Handover Ceremony and to enjoy the pomp and symbolism of the daily Flag-raising Ceremony with beautiful Victoria Harbour as a backdrop.

What to explore at Golden Bauhinia Square?

Everyone can witness the flag raising ceremony in Hong Kong Bauhinia Square. They can participate in the three flag ceremonies. Tourists are more likely to come in time for the daily flag raising that happens every day except for the first day of the month. The daily ceremony includes playing the national anthem with attendees in regular attire. The enhanced ceremony is done with a flag-raising party of police officers. The rifle unit wears their ceremonial attire. The police band also leads the national anthem and closes the ceremony with a 10-minute musical performance.

Many domestic and foreign visitors flock to Golden Bauhinia Square to witness these ceremonies. Tourists love to take photos with the monument. Many people enjoy strolling along the 400-meter waterfront Expo Promenade. This area is also the best spot to watch the Symphony of Lights performance at night.

The atmosphere for the 2015 fireworks was electric. We walked to Golden Bauhinia Square from our hotel on Wan Chai Road, starting at around 10:30 pm. Crowd was already building and we found a spot in the square, facing ICC and the countdown screen. Good crowd control in place. By 11:45pm the place is completely filled with revellers. The excitement was palpable. Fireworks lasted 8 mins and we had a really great view despite the crowd. After the fireworks the dispersal was orderly and didn't take long. We had a good time and thought it would be an excellent idea to experience NYE all over the world. Next stop Paris?

Flag raising by the Hong Kong police once a month but for great looking views of the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, come in a summer night.
