Why Five Days Market is special ?

The 5-day rotating market around Inle Lake offers a good opportunity to meet many different local tribes. These markets are called "5 Day Markets" because the hill people rotate between 5 different locations over a 5 day period. They were here this day and people come from all over the lake to buy produce and other items. They come by boat and parking is scarce but somehow everyone manages to find their way in. The assortment of vegetables present was amazing, tomatoes, eggplants, scallions, peppers, betel, beans, garlic, cheroots and more. And of course there were people selling lacquerware, Buddha statues, longyis and Shan bags to name a few. It was very good to get there first thing in the morning because we missed the tour groups who came later.

Tips for you

  • As colorful minority tribes congregate to sell their wares and also make purchases, the prices tend to be very high for shopping as compared to the market in Nyaung Shwe.
  • The market calendar is lunar as well that means full moon and black moon days have no markets at all. To confuse matters further, days before said moons will then have two markets.
  • Phaung Daw Oo and Nam Phan, because of their central locations, and In Dein, because of the nearby ruins, are also very popular. Visit in early in the morning, these place are always full of tourists.
  • You have to bargain here as well, if you can't do it, just do your shopping in the town, but take a trip to the market(s) for the experience.
  • You should check with your hotel or any tourist agents to know which days the market are held.
    Things to do
  • Ywama is the only one with a ‘floating‘ element; despite what you may read elsewhere, all other markets are more or less entirely on dry land.
