Why Dong Ba Market is special ?
Dong Ba market is situated along the northern bank of Huong river, Tran Hung Dao, Hue city and it is far about Truong Tien bridge about 100 meters to the North. Dong Ba market is the biggest central market of Thua Thien - Hue province and area. At there you can find several typical local speciality such as Non La- palm-leaf conical hat, sauce of máserated shrimp, lanterns.
Besides, for those who are interested in Southeast Asian food, the market supplies a lot during daytime, such as clam rice, beef noodles, shrimp cakes, pancakes, bean puddings, sour shrimps, and My Lai shredded lean meat, which are popular Hue’s daily dishes.
What to explore at Dong Ba Market?
When visiting Dong Ba Market, tourists can easily spot the old bell tower standing proudly amidst the complex of buildings. With nine new buildings and four new sections ranging from seafood to clothes, the market reaches an area of up to 16,000 m2.
If you stay here on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, you can share the custom of the locals by buying "five-color" cakes, which are small & square cakes made of bean and rice powder. The name “five-color” derives from the cakes’ 5 colors of wrapping papers.
You can buy hardware items next to a shoe stall next to costume jewelry, with a little conclave of tables around a small stove area where you sit to have a steaming bowl of delicious pho for 80 cents or so. If there’s a patch of ground with direct sunlight, you might trip over squid laid out to dry.
How to get to Dong Ba Market?
There’s a bus station inside the market where tourist buses often park. Thus, it’s convenient for travelling there by bus or car as well. However, the most interesting way to visit Dong Ba Market must be by cyclo. Some local people even travel there by boat, starting from Vi Da Boat Station. This is really interesting, though tourists aren’t advised to do so as the safety standard is not guaranteed.

Good to know simple phrases. Had an amazing time just learning about people's lives because they thought I could speak fluently with them.
The DongBa Market offers an enormous array of items, ranging from dried seafood, spices, and fruits, to watches, sunglasses, women's accessories and kitchen utensils as well -- i.e. pretty much everything :) The dozens of sellers line the narrow walkways (if you're claustrophobic, you might want to remain on the perimeter, rather than weaving through the closely-spaced stalls in the center), and one is treated to the sights, sounds, and scents of a classic Asian street market (the odors from then durian fruits and dried squid will leave a lasting impression indeed :). Be sure to order a fresh-squeezed sugar cane juice drink (10k VND each), which is iced and really, really refreshing on a hot summer day. The entire place is covered by overhead vinyl/plastic, and so you are shaded (albeit also immersed in those pungent scents as well). Bring your sense of adventure & your bargaining skills, and enjoy the Dong Ba Market when you're in Hue :)
