Why Dhammayan Gyi Temple is special ?
Dhammayangyi Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Bagan, Myanmar. Dhammayangyi Pagoda is the most massive-looking temples in Bagan. It was built in late 12th century by King Narathu (1167-1170). Local legend says that the work was so demanding, the king mandated the mortar less brickwork fit together so tightly so that even a pin couldn’t pass between any two bricks. If a pin could penetrate in between the bricks, then the slaves were killed assumed as they lack of efficient work. Small open places near the top of the passage show intact stucco relief’s and paintings, suggesting that work on the structure had been completed.

What to explore at Dhammayan Gyi Temple?
The Dhammayangyi is the widest temple in Bagan, and is built in a plan similar to that of Ananda Temple. The interior floor plan of the temple includes two ambulatories. Almost all the entire innermost passage, however, was intentionally filled with brick rubble centuries ago. Three out of the four Buddha sanctums were also filled with bricks. The remaining western shrine features two original side-by-side images of Gautama and Maitreya, the historical and future Buddhas. The interlocking, mortarless brickwork at Dhammayangyi, best appreciated on the upper terraces, is said to rank as the finest in Bagan. Unfortunately the highest terraces and hidden stairways leading to them are now off limits to visitors.

I like this temple look outside very nice.Dislike inside have bad smell of bird excrementthe side walk not clean either full of bird exc.Normally very temple have 4 side of Buddha but this one have only 2 side coz 18th century had earth quack and the ceiling fell down.the government have to close by cement plaster on the two side.Just stay outside have nice photo then go to another pagoda.
The smell of the droppings are quite overwhelming sometimes. Other than that, the corridors give good photographic opportunities, if you take advantage of the darkness and the light streaming in from the openings.Just as you enter the 2 buddhas chamber, the rock with the X grooves is located at the right of the entrance. It is said that workers' hands are cut off using this rock whenever their work did not meet the king's satisfaction. There are also paintings on the walls which requires some effort to make out in the dark corridors. There's one where you can take the stairs upwards to have a better view. It's a pity that visitors are not allowed to climb up the top floors. Nevertheless, still worth a visit!
This temple, with its high ceilings and bricked-off passageways is stunning. Just watch where you step as you walk inside the temple with your bare feet. It is home to bats, pigeons, and various other birds who leave their offerings in front of the many Buddha statues there. It is the only temple with two Buddhas sitting side by side, apparently erected as an offering to atone for an evil king's sins after he smothered his father and brother and executed his wife, an Indian princess. The work on the temple had to be so perfect that if a worker left a pin-sized gap in between his bricks his arm was severed on one of the stones with arm-shaped grooves at the temple. A strange form of atonement!
