I had been thinking about staying in Kep but I found a great restaurant that I wanted to go back to and I had a decent hostel with pool for a cheap price, so I didn't want to leave Kampot. I saw the shuttle advertised in a tour office and figured that was a great way to spend the day since I could visit Kep and take a boat ride for not that much more than a bus trip. I found the boat easy enough on the Kampot side and was glad that they made the trip with just 2 passengers (as a solo traveller I'm getting used to things I want to do being cancelled because of not enough people). The ride from Kampot to Kep is smooth and relaxing, though the dock that you arrive at in Kep is a bit far from the market and the beach. I shard a tuktuk with the other passenger to the area by the market and the hotels and walked back from there, stopping across from the beach for a drink. Unless you're a bit crazy and cheap, like me, I advise taking a tuktuk back to the dock from since it was further away than I thought. The ride back was a bit choppy, but I really enjoy the the water splash back at me and watching the tiny fish jump out of the water.
