Why Bunkyo Civic Center Observation Deck is special ?

Looking very much like a gigantic Pez dispenser, the Bunkyo Civic Center Building, just north of Tokyo Dome City, is one of a handful of Tokyo skyscrapers offering a free observation deck. The 25th-floor deck boasts a 330-degree panoramic view of Tokyo, centered on north that includes the skyscrapers of Shinjuku and Ikebukuro as well as the new Tokyo Sky Tree tower. On a clear day you can even see Mount Fuji. At the south end of the floor is a casual restaurant looking out over Otemachi, Ginza and the Imperial Palace.

Tips for you

  • There are pictures up above the windows of the surrounding but all the details are written in Japanese only
  • If you are photographer, tripods are not allowed
  • The skyscrapers of Shinjuku can be seen from this observation deck.
  • Chances of seeing Mount Fuji are highest on clear days in winter and lowest in summer
  • While up in the observatory, make sure to check out the English written walking guide for the Bunkyo district.
  • You’ll only be 25 stories up, so you won’t be able to see quite as far as say Tokyo Skytree
  • You won’t be able to see to the south at all, unless you enter the restaurant that is on the same floor
  • It's just above the Korakuen Metro station.

There are many beautiful view points in Tokyo. This is personally one of my favorites. The Bunkyo Civic Center is a very nice building itself. Access is free, too! I highly recommend making this a stop on your trip to Tokyo, especially if you want a fantastic view while on a budget. You can even see Mt. Fuji on a clear day!
