From Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, you can travel by bus or car to Chiang Khong on the Mekong river (the border), and then take a boat across to Houei Xai in Laos. From Houei Xai there are boats down river to Luang Prabang (1-2 days), but there are no schedules or safety enforcements, so you should be prepared for an adventure.

Tips for you
We moved to La Residence from its sister hotel in Siem Reap. I had a stomach upset at Siem Reap and they had phoned ahead to Luang Prabang and they had various remedies availed for me - very impressive. The staff are superbly trained and charming. The General Manager a young Belgian is extremely helpful - nothing is too much trouble. The food is good but not exceptional - however we were not able to savour much of the menu for reasons which will become clear. The hotel's bar is open air and gets very hot - there is nowhere cool to have a drink. For various reasons we were able to sample two rooms both of which were large with excellent bathrooms and balconies. However the AC in both rooms was very weak probably due to a lack of refrigerant gas in both units ( the AC in the 137 pillars house in Chiang Mai achieves in 20 minutes a temperature reduction that takes two days at La Residence). In June, July, August and December the hotel hosts parties of Disney Adventure tourists to generate revenue in the low season. If you are going in these months check with the hotel to see if there is a Disney Party. The Disney group take over the restaurant in its entirety for Dinner so you either go out or wait until after 9pm. The pool is taken over by noisy American kids from 7am to 9am and 6pm to 10pm - a peaceful breakfast looking at the magnificent views is simply not possible until after 9am. When this party which also takes over the bar is not there this is a fantastic hotel. The GM recommended a very good restaurant - The Blue Lagoon at one end of the night market which we visited to avoid the American group - it was excellent and the hotel car took us and picked us up. A great hotel just check that there isn't a Disney group booked in when you want to go. Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the mountains
