We ate lunch here during our recent trip to Hakone, and it was the best dining experience we had on this trip. This restaurant / bakery is very conveniently located at the southern end of Ashinoko, near the ferry (pirate ship) and the bus terminals. The ground floor is a bakery shop; we had lunch in the second floor (in the British sense) dining space, on counter seating facing a large view window with an excellent view of the lake. One of us had pasta while the other had galette; food was contemporary and tasty, and even with drinks (and the view!) our bill came to be below JPY 2000 total. A modern, refreshing and salient lunch spot in a tourist area full of over-priced

After patiently waiting to have an outdoor seat , we gave up and decided to sit on the second floor with a tableside view of Lake Ashi. The reason why no one was in a hurry to give up their outdoor seat was because it turns out, that you remove your shoes and soak your feet in a warm mineral stream underneath the table. If I knew that I would have waited for a seat problem. This a a bakery and cafe concept with a wonderful design element. 3 floors to enjoy. The main floor is where you write down what pastries, breads or gourmet sandwiches on a little card that you hand off to the cashier with very very limited stool seating. You can buy local microbrew beers, champagne and half bottle wines as well as salads and cheeses. You can actually make up a picnic hamper of items but outside the restaurant and nearby is a lack of benches or seating along the marina. (This was a common theme in japan....the lack of seating in public spaces). The menu is a french theme and a refreshing change from a japanese restaurant. We brought our trays of food upstairs with a wonderful view to enjoy with our gourmet lunch. I just bought a sampling of salads, pastries, breads and sandwiches to try washed down by a local dark beer. There is a coffee and cake service on the second floor. They also have complimentary ice water and patrons clean up after themselves. Excellent , fresh, savoury and warm was our meal and a highlight of our trip. The other nice surprise is that their napkins are actually wet clothes in plastic packaging as opposed to paper. Coffee like any real cafe is treated with respect and made to order by the barista. On the way out, we found a covered seating area full of locals with their dogs. Seems walking the dog and sitting in a cafe is the way they spend a sunny mid week day.
