This was our first experience with Backstreet Academy and we were really happy with what we got. Having been to Phnom Penh numerous times, I've always been curious about the lives of fishing families on the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers. Backstreet Academy provided the perfect opportunity for us to experience this unique lifestyle in an authentic way. We met our translator and then picked up by a Khmer Muslim family and their small wooden fishing boat which also doubles as their home. After initially cruising along the riverbank which was a really unique way to view Phnom Penh, we arrived just before Silk Island and then the fun began. We were taught how to gather a fishing net ready to be thrown before then being given around 2 hours to try out luck. After numerous throwing attempts and with some technique corrections, I was stoked to be throwing the net properly. Results were mixed with a variety of fish in numerous small sizes. But I was more than happy to have mastered the skill. The morning was capped off with a beautiful fish, vegetable and rice lunch (including the fish we caught) on the boat as we made our way back to the Phnom Penh riverfront to be dropped off. Would highly recommend this tour if your interested in learning more about this vital way of life in Cambodia. Really memorable morning for a great price.
