Why Ameyoko Shopping Street is special ?

This discount shopping street, famous throughout Japan for its wide variety of products, is centered in the area under the railway line from JR Ueno Station to Okachimachi Station. At the end of the year, the street is crowded with people seeking out ingredients for osechi-ryori (traditional Japanese New Year foods) and so much so that the tradition has become a year-end seasonal feature. The street is full of all kinds of shops selling fresh fish, clothes, dried goods, cosmetics, precious metals and imported goods. The street started as a black market immediately after the war and is now home to more than 400 shops.

What to explore at Ameyoko Shopping Street?

Alternatively, "Ame" also stands for "America", because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War Two.

Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Opening hours and closing days depend on individual stores, but stores typically open around 10:00 and close around 19:00. Many stores remain closed on selected Wednesdays.

How to get to Ameyoko Shopping Street?

The Ameyoko shopping street runs from Ueno to Okachimachi Station along the train tracks of the JR Yamanote Line and JR Keihin-Tohoku Line. It can also be accessed in a short walk from Ueno-Okachimachi Station along the Oedo Subway Line.

A very nice place for shopping and food. A reasonably priced place for food and shopping. Probably can do lunch here and shop around thereafter. Conveniently located just outside of Ueno station. ( JR Yamanote line)You can find fashionable bags from say USD$30. Hence, my shopping was without any negotiation for prices. You will also find some smaller stores having their summer sales and some designs are interesting. And, they have very good sashimi from some of the Japanese operated restaurants....their sashimi is soooooo good especially tuna toro. The curry rice restaurant is also very good. The curry is not sweet and very fragrant and costs only Y600 for tonkachi and roast beef. Fruits are also sold here and in summer now (July 14) you can find lots of peaches, melons, pineapples etc...Fruits are generally a little more expensive in Japan. They made it affordable by serving in slices. Each slice is about Y100 onwards. There are many small stores within the blocks so walk slowly and browse around. It is worth a visit for a shopping experience that is easy on the pocket...
